Default Sun visor questions

1. Are all C4 sun visors black or are they color keyed to the interior?

2. Are there year-specific lighted sun visors or are they all the same?

My passenger side lighted sun visor has stripped threads. I discovered this as I was adjusting a new roof and when I went to remove the nut holding the spring retainer clip it basically slid right off. I was able to rig it up last night but I really need a new passenger side visor.

TIA

1. As far as I know, they were all black. At least, none of the Corvette parts distributors/catalogs offer them in any other year.

2. They were all the same on the passenger side. Driver side had a map pocket for a couple of years.

I have been looking around for new visors myself. The cheapest I have found them has been $90 each. I think that was through MAD or Ecklers. One has them at $90 each, the other has the pair for $270. I want to replace mine because the bulbs are burnt out on both (have new bulbs, can't get old ones out though) and the driver side flap is now flapping loose.

All the trim from the windows up is black in my car so mine were black. Pretty sure that's true of any 'new style' interior I've been in. Not sure about the older cars.

I say were because mine are history. No more floppy dog ears and it really improves the open car feel and cleans up the looks.

Not sure I'd do that to a Z if showroom was my thing...

Wish I could get away with that, but my fiance always wants to make sure she looks good sitting in it. :lolg: :lolg:

I just point out her reflection in store windows as we pass and say "look how good you look in here, but then you look good everywhere don't you."

Firmly grasp the shovel with both hands and allow the bull&*$% to slide off the end of the blade in a smooth, sweeping motion...

all black to my knowlege, but available with or without lighted vanity mirror.
I just had custom sunvisors made with DVD screens in them. They used the original hardware for mounting. Now I can watch DVD movies, play video games, drink beer, listen to the radio AND talk on my cell phone while I'm driving.... it's called multi-tasking!

Just kidding, I do all that - except listen to the radio! Lighten up I'm just kidding... but I did have custom visors with screens made ($150) for the visors plus $$$ for the screens.

If the visor itself is still good, you could chase the threads for a different locking nut, and still use the same visor.

And slip something in along the seam to stop the floppy ears. I recommend a wire clothes-hanger. :leaving:

Everybody keeps calling those threads... Have you actually had the visor out and looked at it? Those aren't really threads... they don't interconnect one into another. They are simply seperate ridges used to hold the clip down.

When you say your "threads are stripped", why do you think so? Is the visor swinging out under acceleration instead of being able to hold itself in place?

If so, try getting someone to hold up on the visor while you take a deep well socket and hammer from the top and drive the clip down over anothre grove... that should put more tension on the spring and tighten it up.

Those clips aren't the greatest, though... I took mine apart to adjust the top bracket and the old clip didn't have enough life in it when I put it back on. Ecklers sells replacement clips for $3.95 each... although I bet you could find them cheaper at a hardware store...

Yes, ant that's why I'm calling mine threads. I have a nut (7 or 8mm if I recall correctly) that actually holds the clip in place. It's cool because I can adjust just how firmly I want the visor to swing by how much I tighten the nut. Now this is on my '90. I honestly cannot remember if on my '89 the clip was held in by a nut or just tension.

Edit: OK, I just checked my "C4 roof alignment" document I made and the picture of my'89 setup does not show a nut, just the clip. I guess they changed things a bit beginning with the '90 MY.

Thats interesting... A nut on a threaded post would certainly make it easier to remove/replace the sunvisor. That was one of my pet peeves when I removed mine. THe retainer which fits over the grooves on the sunvisor post removed most easily by coming at it from below with a long, thin screwdriver and tapping it up and off. The retainer's "teeth" then seemed to loose some of their "grip" when i later reassembled the thing and I couldn't get enough tension onto the visor post to keep the visor from swinging out under acceleration... Replaing the retainer with a brand new one seemed to take care of it for me...

Hmmm... in thinking about this some more... I need to replace my drivers side sunvisor. I wonder if I could upgrade them to 90+ components in order to get the nut setup like you have. That would make things so much nicer... Perhaps I'll get some junkyard parts and play.

I had my visors restored (leather) and am really happy w/the look/feel of them. I have a pic or 2 posted via my URL below, if you care to look. I am very impressed with the way they turned out.
