Finally got my 89 to the point where I'm toying with getting the faded bumpers / car painted now that I've rebuild/replaced everything else.
Went to one of the considered better places local to me, where they described the disassembly of the entire car, stripped down to the jel coat, 8 coats of color (mixed anyway I desire) and three coats of clear, and takes a month to do.
$6500.00
Thats more than I paid for the car !! I asked if they did anything of lesser quality and was politely told no. I respect their dedication to quality, but thats a little too pricey for me.
Ya know, the paint's not looking that bad after all :D

That sounds like a really good paint job, like you'd put on a perfect restoration. Certainly too good for my 'driver'.
I think I'd get more bang for my SIXTY-FIVE-HUNDRED-DAMNED-DOLLARS by taking my car to Earl Sheib and spending the remainder on another Corvette.
You will probably go into shock when I say this, but I had my Vette painted at MAACO. It cost me about $1800, including emblems and door panels. They used a quality European Poly Plus paint w/clearcoat & 4 yr warranty.
I think, for the cost, it looks great. I only have 2 complaints. 1) I have a small amount of spidering on the hood (about 1 inch) & there is a line (due to a hidden stress fracture on rear bumper (probably caused from vette being lifted/towed at some point in the past. Those 2 things could have been avoided, if I had spent about 5-6k, but like you, I only paid 6k for the whole car. So, I compromised & can't really complain. You can see by my sig photos & URL that it looks decent.
Had mine painted last summer, about $3500-4000 no disassembly and it took exactly one month. Love to wash, detail and wax it now. It gets a lot of compliments.
MAACO does great work, just double check that they got the color correct :leaving:
There's a lot of work involved in that cost, that's like a top of the line paint job. I talked to a guy who said no messing around, doing it all, prep and paint, making it look like new, would cost minimum $5500.
this is a $500 maaco paint job. looks decent, but up close it's a little rough in spots & there was overspray i had to clean up. ok for my driver ('84 caprice), but i have the '84 vette currently in a more reputable shop getting rear bumper totally stripped & refinished, & a scuff on the front bumper touched up, & painting a front plate cover to match - $750.
I’ll shop around a little more. I don’t need the show quality paint job or the headaches worrying about that first nick or chip that comes with it. I built this guy to enjoy.
I'm sure I can find a more reasonable alternative. If not, the paint is actually in pretty good shape. If it weren't for the fade on top of the rear bumper I probably wouldn't even consider paint.
Paintng is all about the prep, prep it yourself and save some real money.
Find a shop that will do the masking and spray only. Use Dupont paint thats the factory finish since 1982. You should be able to get your car sprayed for under $500.00 depending on color, red is the most money.
After the car cures for a minimum of 3 months take it and get it wet sanded and polished, you'll end up with a excellent respray for less than half of the quote. You should be able to pull this off for under $1500.00
Keep looking. As for Macco I wouldn't let them paint my garbage can.
At the body shop I worked at $5000 is pretty much the baseline for a decent paint job. A rotisserie job (like on a muscle car) runs $10K and up. There was a Chevelle there with a bill of over $13K. One of the most beautiful jobs I've ever seen. You get what you pay for. Do your research, you can work the price down if you're willing to do some labor yourself. My advice is get it media blasted. It will save the shop a LOT of time. If they're good they planned to do this anyway.

I'll be having the exact same paint job to my '88 Camry very soon, but would definitely never go to MAACO for my vette :( $6,500 is a bit steep, however it sounds like they're a top notch outfit. You might want to go to another place that does very fine work, and go for a $3,000 - $4,000 job :yesnod: Good luck!
You cant go on price alone. You need to know the shop and seen many examples of their work. When you say less than $3000 to paint a vette, you need to be sure you aint paying 3000 for a 800 dollar job. I agree 6500 is alot but they sound like they know how to paint. Keep shopping you will get what you want for fair money. Talk to local car owners who have nice paint on their cars, they may know a good shop. Dont look for a Corvette specialty painter a good body man is a good body man. I dont know what you want to spend but i would figure on a 2k minimum to be a respectable job unless you know someone personally. Its a lot of work to paint a car right!!
You get what you pay for...especially in a paint job! I paid $3500.00 just for paint....I prepped the car myself & brought it to them dis assembled & had to put it back together my self! :smash:I was told by the owner that if I didnt prep it myself it would be well over $6000.00!
