Ok, I have Haynes, Chilton, and GM Shop Manuals. What about the Helm? Which do you use, and why? Is there a difference between the Helm and the GM Manual, and which is better if there is?
My prime reference is the set of GM Shop Manuals; sometimes I refer to the Haynes but it is not nearly as rich in detail and information.
I also have several volumes on TPI theory & trouble shooting along with several on SBC building and a Comp Cams catalog which are valuable when planning mods.
Um aren't the GM shop manual and Helms manual one in the same?
Either way, I have all the manuals I've been able to find for my year, and the GM Shop(what I thought was the same as Helms) is by far the most detailed.

Re: Manuals (RichS)
Helms does not make manuals, per se. They sell the factory General Motors manuals and, I believe, are GM-authorized to reprint old, out-of-print GM manuals.
For instance, they sell old owner's manuals for Chevys. I got one for my son when he bought an old ('78?) 4x4 chevy pickup.
Helms probably sells manuals for other makes, but I'd have go to Helm's website to verify this, and I have to get ready for church.

[QUOTE]I agree that a GM Service manual is a Helms manual. [QUOTE]
Backwards.
The manual sold (and probably published) by Helms is the GM Service Manual.
I'm looking at my GM manual, purchased from Helms. The title page says "copywrite 1995 General Motors Corporation.....No part of this publication may be.....without the prior written permission of General Motors Corporation."
Nowhere in the manual is the name Helms found. If it's a "Helms Manual", why is GM claiming all rights to its contents?
You may be confident that the manual sold by Helms is the genuine GM Service Manual.
I use all three. I use the Haynes and Chiltons to get an overview of what I am going to be getting into. Then I break out the GM Service Manual to actually work with, unless the Haynes or Chiltons has the same picture I need (wire numbers on distributor, for example). Then I break the other manual out so as not to get my Service Manuals too greasy!
i use both the gm and the Chiltons for different points of view and some different angles of pics. the gm manual is worth its weight in gold to me :smash:
