As my plans for replacing my U-joints were pre-empted by a sarting problem with my daily driver, I decided to look around to see why my A/C hasn't working in my 85 C4. Turns out someone at sometime unplugged the electrical connector for the compressor. Why would someone do that? So I plugged it in, and it works fine, except it needs a recharge (or a leak find/fix).
Anyway, the fan only works on high. The 2 slower blow speeds I get nothing. So that tells me the blower should be ok, but what is my fix? New control switch, or what?
Glad you asked...I just went thru the same thing and I think I can help. Short story: The fan only has one speed (High), to get the other speeds, the juice for the fan goes thru a plate called a Capacitor. This capacitor consists of 3 springs of different thickness and as you choose the different speeds of the fan (one speed for each spring) the juice for the fan is reduced by the thickness/resistance of the spring. Enough of that, look for a triangular shaped plate held down by three screws and connected in the middle of the plate by a plug with 4 wires (dk blue, light blue, tan, yellow). As your standing in front of the car, this capacitor is on the right side of where the Evaporator is. Hope that helps. The GM part number is 14093106 and is pretty cheap...about $14.00. One more thing. If you find it, look at the springs and if any one spring is touching another, that's your problem. I found out too late and bought a new one when all I had to do is bend the spring away from the other. One more thing. The high speed is controlled differently by a relay which is the black plug in on the other side of the Evaporator. I've had that go bad on me also and sorry to say, it might also be your problem...GM part number 10019535 (cheap also).
The blower fan on my 88 was stuck on high – SunCR correctly diagnosed the problem as a blown fuse on the firewall in the engine compartment. I have climate control and it’s an 88 so maybe different to yours.
The blower went back to high on Sunday and the fuse had blown again, it was only 10 amps so I’ve put a 15 in there.
