Default Sun Visor Fix

I got tired of the little "ears" on my sunvisors hanging down like a hound dogs, interferring with my outward vision and decided to find a cure.

The reason this happens is that GM spared no expense to use the finest cardboard available as backing for these $250.00 a pair plus beauties.

I noticed there are holes in each sunvisor for the mirror light wiring harness and came up with an idea (possibly a good one).

I inserted a piece of coat hangar into the hole and used it as a reinforcement for the ear. Viola! it worked. The problem was when I flip the visors the other way the hangar would bend and that sucked.

I have now found a permanent (not to mention hi-tech in comparison) cure.

Go to any Pep Boys and buy a 5 ft long universal choke cable. Take it home and remove the inner cable and handle (or use it to fix the rusted cable on your garden tractor like I did. It's your call and I do not care.)

Now you have a nice thin 5 foot long spring. Cut it into 2 equal halves (that would be 2.5ft long each for those of you without a calculator).

Now, thread each of those halves into each visor and the 'ears" should stay level with the visor, but flex when needed.

Now if I could only figure out a use for that left over coat hangar............. :steering:

Jerry Watts also has a fix for this, he took some thin plastic sheets and cut them to fit and slid them in through where the mirror is attached. I've thought about the coat wire, but looking for something a little thinner.

BTW, I found them for $159 for a pair.

I fixed mine different on each side before I finally replaced them because they just disintergrated.

On the drivers side I cut a piece of steel to fit the visor from one of my old real estate signs. I gently undid the stitching on the end and inserted the steel between the masonite layers and sewed the end back up. Worked great.

On the passenger side, because of the mirror, I used a wooden 12" ruler. This time I didnt have to open but about 1" of stitching. Slipped the ruler over the Mirror and under the masonite. Stiched it back up and it was almost as good as new

Like I said the age finally got to them and I replaced them a couple of weeks ago.

The new replacements from Ecklers were a good fit but in reality the drivers side is too long as it interferes with the rear view mirror when you drop the visor without swinging it out first.

Now...I believe it was dbWade that had his visors cut down and reupholstered in leather.......I will do that to my new visors when I do the seats.

I fixed mine with the above fix. I used the plastic from a floppy case. Thin enough and strong enough

I fixed mine a few weeks ago and they work great.

The vanity mirror comes off. I took a small flat blade and carefully pryed the mirror out. The mirror has two rubber/plastic prongs (one on each side) that goes through the cardboard. Once these were removed I took an old check box cover and cut it up. On mine and the other set of visors that I have the floppy end consisted of two pieces of cardboard and I just slipped it between them.

You can not tell this has been done. It takes about 5 min a side and can be done while it is in the car.
