Several years ago I had a 6 pack of Dr. Pepper explode under the back window of my car in the good old Texas sun (I don't put cokes back there anymore). I have tried almost every carpet cleaning product I could find and nothing even made a dent. Well, this weekend, I was trying a hair dryer and was making some progress when I thought about an Iron and wash rag. Well, the wash rag is toast, but most of the stain has come out. At least enough to tell the carpet is blue. You need to be careful with the iron and make sure you use the steam/linen setting. I was amazed at how much brown liquid there was.
Try OxyClean. one scoopful to about 8 oz hot water. (It works wonders on pet stains in the house carpet too.) No seriously, after the one and only time I left my windows down during a florida rain storm, the seat belts (oak-beige interior) where in terrible shape with stains from 10 years of use and having been soaked made it stand out. So I extended the seat belts out fully, mixed up some OxyClean and a scrub brush, within minutes they looked like brand new. It was truly amazing how dirty these belts get and the filthy water afterwards. Dry it with a towel. If its a really bad stain then after it dries run the sweeper over it to pick up the residue left from drying, then hit it one more time with OxyClean. It should be completely gone.
The problem with my stain was that the sugar/carmel from the suryp had hardened on the carpet by the time I got back to the car. Only by using the steam iron was I able to melt the junk in the carpet enough to be picked up by the rag I had over it.
Sort of like getting gum into carpet...almost a no win situation.
