Seems like most of the C4s for sale have automatic transmissions. Were more autos originally made? Also, do L98 with 4+3 and LT1 with 6 speeds generally bring more money? Has a poll been taken on who has what?
Yep, you'll find a lot of talk around about this... 6 Spds were less common then automatics , making them more desirable.. It took me a while to find the right car with a 6 speed... The ONLY time I regret getting one is while sitting in traffic... UP DOWN UP DOWN UP DOWN... Other then that, I love it :)
There were more Autos made. They don't have quite the same performance as a manual, but there's nothing wrong with it :D I don't think the manual should make a real difference in the price because the overall condition of a used car is what really matters. But, I if you need a manual, I'd say go with the 6spd over a 4+3 because of many overdrive problems with the latter.

Actually, 700R4 equipped cars were faster than those with the 4+3. It was proven when MT, R&T, or C&D tested them. 6spd cars were faster (obviously) than the 700R4 cars though.
Not sure about other years, but in '96 of 21,536 total, 15,177 had auto's, 6,359 had 6 speeds. (137 of those were CE's with grey interior and F45 suspension :D ) And that was the year when 6 spd = LT4, auto = LT1, so there was a good incentive to go manual.
Another interesting statistic: out of 5412 CE's, 2009 had the LT4 / MN6 combo.
I love my 6 spd especially in traffic where I can row up and down through the gears. :steering: On the highway, when I don't get to shift, I'm bored.
BTW this topic shows up about once a month (but I never get tired of it :D  )
I bought an auto 'cause the old lady "wanted to drive it" occasionaly. Over the years that has meant "once, for a block and a half". She claims the vette is "Too loud, too low and too fast", can you imagine? :lolg:
Much of the C4 era brought us only an average 20-30% manual trannies from the factory. It also took me a good bit of hunting & patience, there were plenty of autos but I despise them. Love the open twisty road! :steering:
I would pay more for a 6 speed than an automatic but, I wouldn't pay more for a 4+3 than an automatic. The reason, for me, is the 4+3 overdrive unit is notoriously unreliable. While manuals generally give more HP and Torque. I don't really consider this when I may have to spend over $1200 to fix the overdrive.
The reason there is more Auto's than manual's is because the C4 came standard with an Automatic. The dealer or the person ordering the car had to order a Manual trans. By the way it was no extra charge for the Manual.
Now in 1996 if you wanted an LT-4, it came only with the 6-speed trans. Also ZR-1's were only 6-speeds.
C4's the 6-speed is slightly faster than the autos.
However, in the C5's the Automatic is faster then the 6-speed.
6 Speed is the only way to go for me!!
Even in traffic, you can use the gearing to your advantage.
Gotta love the 1 to 4 when you can use it.
After all, its a performance car!
i would gladly trade my 90 auto for a 6spd, even if it were an 89-although i like my interior a lot better.
anyone near mckinney tx tired of shifting? :D
