My 90 L98 engine bay is in need of cleaning. Does anyone recommend a brand/type of engine degreaser/cleaner that they had great success with? Also, I know that I will need to cover the distributor, but is there anything else I should cover and/or try to avoid spraying to avoid any problems? I did a search on this and found a great idea to use steel wool in addition to engine degreaser. Any other tips anyone have? Thanks a lot!

I have had good results with Simple Green and a green scrub pad. Just spray it on, scrub with the pad and hose it off. Just watch the distributor and the TPS (on the throttle body). If you have a cut lid like I do, cover it with a bright colored towel (bright so that you don't forget it!).
I have had great success with a product called "orange blast" it's available at walmart. It's a citrus based degreaser. Just spray on and hose down, no scrubbing. Heavily soiled areas might need a second application. After the degrease, spray the compartment down with some tire-foam and go for a ride long enough to get the engine up to temp for ~20 minutes. You'll be amazed how great it looks.
Cover alternator and distrib with plastic bag. Spray with straight Simple Green. Wait a few minutes. Rinse with hose. Apply tire foam or other dressing to hoses etc. and drive till dry.
If you want to spend a little time, wipe the aluminum down with Flitz or other metal polish to brighten it up.
I used an engine degreaser (don't remember which brand) on my 86. I let it sit for a few minutes & then hit it w/the pressure washer. Covering the alt, dist, etc. I agree about the Simple Green, but I used that after the engine degreaser. I think degreaser is stronger for breaking down built up sludge. I use Simple Green by hand & rag.
