My 86 stock L-98 with 120k miles runs highway, @ approx. 75 mph avg. staying between 185 to 195 degrees. Hot in traffic, will go up to 215 than the auxillary fan kicks in to bring it back down below 200. Im told this range of temperatures is fine, by people who know a hell of a lot more about the mechanics of the car than I do.
In traffic, after a bit of driving, my 86 vette runs high at up to 232 degrees oil & my coolant is less usually around 180-220. Haven't been above 232 on the oil. I hear some people claim that their early C4 vette runs very cool in traffic, but I am hesitant to believe that. I had an 86 vette b4 this one & it was the same situation.
I have heard that these engines are built to withstand high temps & not to worry until you reach 250 degrees.
BTW- This these temps are based on outside temperature of around 100 degrees.

[QUOTE]" my 86 vette runs high at up to 232 degrees"
I have been told that the early 86 coupes, with cast iron heads, run 10 to 15 degrees hotter than later coupes (& all convertibles) with the aluminum heads. Anyone know if this is fact?
'94 6-speed usually 188-192 on the open road. Gets up to 225 if I sit in one place for a while. Under 35 mph it's usually 193-196. Cools the best above 40 mph.
My 84 runs in the city @180-195. On the highway @170-190 depending on if I run into traffic or not, going up hill the temp can climb to 220 but soon as I level off it goes back down.
My 85 seems to run much colder than most others. It ranges between 165 and 185. Never seen it run any hotter than that. Car performs well, with no problems. My car is in New England, maybe thats why it runs cooler?
My 86 used to run those high temps too (205 highway 220 city) until I installed a bypass switch from MAD to turn fan on at 200.Now it never gets above 205 no matter what traffic. Those high temps always worried me to death.
My 92, A/T, with a 3 row custom Griffen rad and a custom Ed Wright chip. Runs about 181 to 192 with air on freeway, 90-100 degrees and around 193 in traffic with air on, 90 degrees outside temp.
