Default SCAM Alert

I received two emails answering my ad to sell my car on the internet. The first was asking confirmation of my price saying there was an interested party. The second was the following:

Hello There,
I appreciate your mail and confirmation to proceed on the transaction. I am
impressed by the prompt attention accorded the transaction considering the
need for us to round up on time.

My client has accepted to pay the stipulated price immediately with a
cashier’s check, just that the check, is going to be in an amount larger
than the cost of the vehicle. Reason being that it is a refund payment to my
client and the Company issuing the check has the policy not to issue more
than one check to a refund payment, which means that the check is going to
carry the whole amount em-block for the sales and shipping of the vehicle
from your base. That's home pickup.

The check that will be sent to is $25,200.00 and you would have to deduct
the cost of your vehicle $18,500.00 from it immediately you cash it and send
the balance $6,700.00 to my client via wire transfer (Western Union /
MoneyGram) to offset the shipping charges. So he is entrusting you to handle
his funds with honesty, care and utmost confidentiality.

Then you are required to send your full Name, which should be on check, and
the address where the check is going to be sent to you and your contact
telephone numbers for fast communication. On receipt of this information,
the check will be sent to you. After you send the balance, the shipper will
be paid and they will come and pick up the vehicle immediately.

Ask question where you are not cleared. I would be there to explain further.

Looking forward to rounding up this transaction as soon as possible.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Yours sincerely,

Someone else was involved with this. The check that was sent to him was $75,000. He has the Secret Service involved with it now too. It was last week in this section, I believe. You may want to take a look. Had some really good information.

Call me stupid (hopefully not really) but how does that scam work?
Is the check they send you bogus, so that later on you end having to pay the money back to the bank and they are free and clear with the money you wired to them? Just curious, thanks.

It is a total scam. The check they send you is no good. They are counting on you sending them the "overage" back before their check clears. Even if your bank clears their check right away, if it ends up bouncing, and this can take a few weeks, you are the one that is liable and the crooks are long gone. Also they are not interested in the car they will never come to pick it up. I read about this scam recently.

Cash their check. Make sure it clears your bank for a solid week before you send ANY money to them or release the car.

If the check is no good - turn them in to the Feds.

Clark Howard (Consumer Warrior) addresses this exact scam seems like nearly every week. Generally the way it goes is some person in a foreign country wants to buy the vehicle but as you indicated they want to pay more than the price advertised. I believe the cashier's check is drawn on a phony out of country bank and you end up responsible for the difference. Sometimes they want your checking account number saying they'll deposit the funds directly, what ends up happening is they drain your account instead.

My sister had another version of the scam run on her. In this case they pretended to be a wealthy widower who had millions in a bank in Spain and instead of willing it to their children then wanted to give it to a church and wanted her to do it for them. I kept warning her to cut it off the moment they want SSN's or check account numbers or credit card numbers. She bought it up to the point where she heeded my cautions. Once she stop short of giving acct numbers they disappeared like magic.

Moral: If its too good to be true, it probably is.

sheesh is there really people gullible enough to fall for that?
id be like "instead of me cashing your check, you cash your check.if you would like to purchase my car i will take cash.when you come to get the car you can bring the cash with you. thank you and have a nice day"
but really, the way the internet works, your best line of defense was already posted. "delete that right now and forgot about it". do not respond in any way.im sure you regret not using your gut instinct and deleting the first one, which just alerted them that they have a live one. theyre like "fish on!"
glad you caught em.
