These cars are equipped with a 1 to 4 skip shift feature that allow them to avoid the gas guzzler tax. Basically what this does is when you accelerate from a stop at a certain speed in first gear, at a programmed rpm point a light comes on and a mechanism prevents you from shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. It forces you to shift from 1st to 4th. Chances are though, if you are not the original owner of the car, then a previous owner has disabled the feature. Therefore, the one to four light will still come on, but you will still be able to shift from first to second. If not, there is plenty of info on this forum about how to disable it.
Just as an experiment, accelerate hard from a stop in first gear. The light won't come on. Next, gradually accelerate from a stop in first gear and watch the light come on. The algorithm is set up to know when you will want to use 2nd gear (based on acceleration rate) and when you are more concerned with conserving fuel.

When Chevrolet had to meet the CAFE requirements (federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements), they set up the ECM to foce manual tranny cars to only be able to shift from 1st gear to 4th gear at certain low speeds and part-throttle position. During these conditions, the "1 to 4" light will come on.
It effectively locked out 2nd and 3rd gears for slow driving as you get in city traffic. The CAGS (Computer Aided Gear Selection) system can easily be disabled by simply pulling a wire from the tranny. You can get a connector that plugs into the cable end and keeps the light from coming on.

What it means is that you need to climb under there, unplug the Cags, tape it up and enjoy a whole new experience with your Vette. You will enjoy it MUCH more without the annoying skip shift.

CAGS may already be disabled if the light is your only symptom. Unplugging CAGS prevents the shift lockout; it does not keep the light from illuminating.

There is no need to purchase one of these. All that is needed is to tape up both ends to prevent corrosion.
REDGUTS....true. I just assumed that since he was asking what the light was that he had not undid the CAGS!

If you don't have the kit, your 1 to 4 light will come on.

I'm not positive, but the guy from Eckler's told me that the kit will not stop the light from illuminating. True or False?

If you want the light to stop coming on you've got to program it out of your computer.
Important note here
Certain versions of the TunerCat software will make the skip shift enable at strange times if you turn it off in the computer. In this case if you want it gone and you want the light off, you program it out of the computer AND unplug it.

Sometimes when I accelerate slowly in my '94, the light does not come on but it is very difficult to shift out of 1st to any gear without some force. Am I doing something wrong? Why is ther no light? Steve S.

I mean no misharm. The shift is really wacky and it took me awhile to get used to how to do it. After a month, when I was real good at it, I finally got cags defeat plug.
Not sure about the other year models, but the ecklers plug is on my 93.
My light never illuminates and it works flawlessly.

Mine doesn't work. The light comes on, when I try and shift it gets stuck in first, grinds, and you have to shift it back into first, it refuses to even go into neutral, nevermind 4th. It has worked twice since I got the car 2 months ago, other than that, it grinds everytime. I have to avoid shifting while I'm accelerating slowly until I hit 20mph. I have the kit, just haven't had the time to get under there and disconnect the wires.

CAGS never gets me anymore. Just make sure you tromp on it when leaving a dead stop. :steering: Always shift between 4000 - 5000 RPM ...... Problem solved
