MOJO, I thought the starter on the LT-5 was on top of the motor in back between the heads. I think I read about this and starter problems that many owners encountered in the 1991-1993 time frame. As I remember it many owners had to have starter replacements after they sprayed water in motor when cleaning them. Seems the water collected in the valley where the starter was mounted and shorted out the wiring??? As I remember starter replacemant was very expensive as you can imagine considering what a "QUALIFIED (certified) LT-5 Trained" mechanic had to remove just to access the starter. I was lead to believe it was not a job for a shade tree mechanic or corner gas station car repair outfit.
I'm lucky...never had starter problems on my LT-5 but never ever let any water get sprayer on my motor either. I'd all but forgotted the starter stuff until I read this post.
Maybe some of the folks in the ZR-1 forum can clarify this for us??? Bill
On the subject of starter replacement on LT-5.
While you do need to remove the plenum top and ignition coils, it is not difficult and any moderatly astute shadetree mechanic can do it in a couple of hours. It's these types of misconceptions that scare people away from the ZR-1. Currently the best bargin in used supercars today.(and no mine is not for sale!) :steering:
Starter is under the car where all the grime lives. Follow the battery cable.
The Northstar has the starter buried in the engine also. Good planing.
Thats right up there with the opti-spank.
GM's market share has fallen to 15% from a high of 50%. Good engineering is a lost concept at GM.
In reality, you have to blame the Britts for the starter position on the LT-5 as well as the Northstar.
Lotus did the original developement work on the LT-5 and the Northstar design is a direct relative.
Never forget that Lucas was the birth of all things electrical in Brittain!
