Well, I finished the tune up on my LT1. The passenger side took about 4 hours to do. Most of that was spent trying to figure out how I was going to get it done. I did that about 2 weeks ago. Next time, I figure I can cut the time in half. The driver side I did this weekend. I had been looking at it and dreading doing it. Saturday, I decided, what the heck. I took off the inner fender well as suggested by fellow members here. Then, to get to the wires on the disctributor, I removed the belt and tensioner. That freed up a lot of room where I was able to get to the distributor to replace the wires. The plugs were a lot easier to get out without the fender well in place. Start to finish, replacing the plugs and wires on the driver side took about 2 hours. They only way to improve that time would be if the wires would have gone on the distributor faster. I had a couple of stubborn ones. :smash: I looked at the coil wire and I don't know if I am going to bother with it, at least not in the near future. My forearm is still sore from wedging it in between the upper radiator hose and alternator to push the wires on the distributor. All of this headache was worth it though. My fuel economy has gone up greatly! Maybe this weekend, I will change the passenger side O2 sensor. Then the tuneup will be complete. :D Then it is on to the suspension. That is going to be fun....
Any job that says 5 - 10 minutes takes me a lot longer for some reason. After the first time doing something, then I am right down in the range of the mechanics' manuals. I might replace it then, if you can get to it that easily.
As for the Optispark...I have had it replaced twice at the dealership. Hopefully, it will be quite some time for the next one. Looking in the books (Service Manual, How to Rebuild LT1's, Chiltons, Haynes, etc.) it looks like it is a weekend job at the least. :smash:
