How do I find the VIN on the engine of my 1987 Vette? I have the shop manuals and Chilton manuals. However, I'm having trouble relating the pictures shown in the manuals to the actual car.
Here's the caveat...I'm not very mechanical. If I have to fix something on the car, locating the part that needs to be fixed is half the battle for me. So, please make any replies very specific as to what to look for or around, etc.
For engines produced after 1955 thru 1996 the numbers are stamped on a machined pad just forward of the cylinder head on the passenger side. It's not really your VIN that's stamped on the pad...THE NUMBERS AND CODES STAMPED INDICATE PLANT, DATE BUILT, 3 CHARACTERS FOR SUFFIX # indicating engine use and finally the sequential part of the VIN number (except for 1991 thru 1996 the suffix # portion is at the rear of the engine usually on the drivers side. These are explained in greater detail in the "CORVETTE BLACK BOOK" and for 1986 and older Vettes, also in the NCRS judging manuals.
Kinda confusing...hope you can make some use of my ramblings, Bill

Re: How to find VIN on engine? (c4vette1987)
It should be in front of your passenger side cylinder head. The only thing is there's hoses and brackets not to mention you AC compressor blocking it's view. If you get a flash light and pull back the hoses and stuff you might be able to see it.
