what...did ya get pissed off and unload a few rounds into her :smash: LOL any way i used a very good independent.. hit some shows and such and ask around a good painters name will pop up if people have had a good experience with them... word of mouth is the best advertising ya can get!!
Having been in the bodyshop business for 20 years, my suggestion is to never take it to a dealer. The problem isn't the people that work there for those exact people may work in my shop in the future, the problem is a bodyshop for a dealership is never a money making part of the equation... thus you'll find many dealerships without bodyshops. With that in mind, being that it doesn't make the money that for example the service department does, you'll find that it will become a "production" shop and try to make it up on quantity.
Independent shops tend to do a better job and especially ones that are not DRP (Direct Repair Program).... reason being, an independent typically still follows the industry standard as far as pricing but tends to look out for the customer by not being in bed with the insurance companies. I personally am not a DRP for any insurance company simply because I don't want to be dictated to on how to repair someone's car by their methods or aftermarket parts, etc, etc.
My shop does most of the work for the local BMW, Acura and Lexus dealerships which are not only owned by the same person but so is the chevy dealership in town. The chevy dealership is the only one in that group that has a bodyshop yet the others send their work out because of quality.
My suggestion is to find someone that a) relys on word of mouth (for example, we don't advertise anywhere.. don't even have an ad in the phone book, everything is word of mouth and referalls) and b) someplace that you can view some of their work... it especially helps if they specialize in this case, corvettes.
