Default Cold weather temp takeoff?

With the colder weather approaching, at what engine temp do you all feel it is safe to start driving at? With the temperatures in the 30's in the am around here, I have been warming up the engine to a little over 100 degrees, then taking off. Wondering what you all do. Do you go buy your engine or oil temp? I don't even like talking about this, but I plan on driving year round as much as I can, and am hoping for no sloppy snow or slush this winter. I have NO idea why I live in this state!

I usually wait till about 120 degrees of oil temp before I drive hard, but you can drive it cold if need be.

Just make sure you run a 5w30 weight oil when its cold to help protect the engine better at startup and dont get on it too hard til it gets to about 150 oil temp and you should be fine..>>>!

As soon as the idle drops, I start to drive. I won't get on it hard until the oil is at 160*.

Here it is folks, yet another classic reply, completely inappropriate, not helpful in any way whatsoever, is downright rude & bashes the person making the original post. Can someone give this guy some oxygen or better yet a brain transplant?

Anyway getting back to planet earth.....IMO 5W-30 oil recommendation is a good one, especially in the winter MI climate. I have to take a somewhat less scientific approach since my '90 has lousy gages, I usually warm up for 2-5 minutes depending on outside winter temps.

bradvette, lots of people here happen to like tony, and enjoy his posts. I don't see how attacking him, or anyone else, is going to do any good for this forum.

I always let the oil get up to 150F before really driving it hard, but so long as you have good oil pressure, you should be ok.

If youre talking about what temp you should let it get to before driving anywhere, you shouldnt let the engine warm up at an idling rpm. Just get in and drive it, dont let it sit in your driveway and warm up unless you just want a warm interior.

I never thought of looking at the oil temp-good idea. I live in Maine, and I go by the engine temperature. The car seems to run a lot better if I let it get to 100 degrees before I start driving. Of course, my gas mileage is starting to drop because it takes a while to get to 100 degrees when it is only 30 degrees outside. I only have a few more weeks of consistent driving left, and then it will be hit or miss until May!

I always allow my water temp to get around 110 before I back out of the driveway and I don't run it hard until the oil is around 160. :auto:

I usually let it idle til I see the coolant temp hit 40 degrees ( 104) then start to drive it slowly. I have a Z51 car with an oil cooler and a Moroso AccuSump which also acts as an oil cooler.

I have to be on it fairly hard or in a really hot day to get an oil reading other than LO.

By the way, I run Valvoline VR1 Racing Formula 20w50 oil (7-8 quarts), the AccuSump holds around 3.

I try to avoid letting it idle for too long. I'll let it idle for a min or 2, then keep it under 2000 RPM until it's warmed up.
