Default New Front Air Dam Spoiler -- GM vs Aftermarket

I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with putting on a new front air dam (spoiler) My main concern is wether or not the ones you buy from say Ecklers fit well or should I go genuine GM replacement?

I helped my buddy put one on his 81 that he got from Ecklers, it seemed pretty decent. Of course it was $100...the pieces for the C4 are what, like $40.

I haven't tried to replace mine yet. I would think any would be ok. I looked at mine and it seems pretty straight foward. Also seems to have room to "fudge" if necessary. :smash:

I have replaced them on all 4 of the Vettes I have owned. The Front Air Dam is pretty much the same weather you buy it from the dealer or aftermarket. In fact, if you check your prices, it may be cheaper from the dealer then Ecklers or Mid America, if you price in the shipping cost.

I've got the "Prowler" spoiler from Ecklers looks cool, but man is it low scrapes all the time. It's held up well to some real bad scrapes, sure glad I didn't get it painted to match the car

Kind nice.

the spoiler on Z51 equipped cars were I think 1 inch lower than standard cars. I know my stock air dam is really low (wide) about 3.5-4" or there abouts.

Red-85-Z51,
Tommy,
Why do you show all your RPO'S? Is that really so important?
Just wondered.

Rick... the stock air dams from Ecklers and Chevy are exactly the same. I replaced mine twice, once with Ecklers when I bought the Vette, and then a year later with Chevy's because they got damaged during a service visit. I think the set from Ecklers was 49.99 for all 3 pieces and the Chevy parts dept was 20.15 for just one piece. (That was listed on their invoice they replaced it. I haven't had to check the price at Superior yet.)

You might want to pick up some of those plastic body nuts in case any are damaged or just need replacing. I think the part number is 3907444. They are the white plastic ones that press into those squre holes and you screw into them. They are like .81 each at Chevy.

I picked up a set (3 pieces) of GM from Corvette Central for SLIGHTLY less than the cost of repros.

O.K., here is what could potentially be a stupid question. What does the front air dam spoiler do? Does it serve a functional purpose? My 1984 is missing the center piece. It is well down the list of things to fix, including brakes, weatherstripping, etc.

Here is the Prowler painted to match. It didn't reduce the ground clearance by much. I did scrape it once on a deep dip to a driveway.

Sorry, it's a little dirty.

It helps feed/force fresh air to the radiator. The center piece is definitely a must.

I thought the air dam was used to press the air around the car towards the back (add in side skirts) and it would produce low pressure under the car thus forcing the car lower at high speeds giving you better handling.

I may be wrong but I am sure that is what it is for

:iagree: w/ Midgetfist.

I have busted my center spoiler twice and my temps went up a lot more and got there in a hurry. The center spoiler is needed to keep the radiator cool.
