Hey Gents,
Just picked up my '92 and being a first time corvette owner im not sure what is "normal". So here is my ?....when my vehicle is stopped(and idleing), the temp gauge increases to the max on the dial; but as soon as I start driving again...it drops to normal temp....any suggestions?
1st of all...welcome to the forum :seeya , and congrats!
But no...that's not "normal". Assuming you have a stock thermostat and a healthy cooling system, even in the worst stop'n go traffic in august, you should run somewhere around 195±10°F, and shouldn't see any temp above 235°.
Sounds like you may be low on coolant, or your cooling fans aren't coming on. If the coolant level's ok...let the car idle and turn on the A/C. BOTH fans should be running with the A/C on.
Another couple of "dirty" secrets about '92 cooling: incredible amounts of junk get stuck in the cavity in front of the radiator. Use a flashlight and , on the right side of the radiator housing, take a look. I found leaves, cig butts, and even a plastic newspaper sleeve stuck in there - noting like have a piece of plastic wall-papered over the radiator. Seems that when the cooling fan kicks on the resulting suction would pull the leaves, plastic, etc against the radiator, blocking the air flow. I used a vacuum with a thin extention hose to suck out the crap.
Also - due to the design of the cooling system any air pockets in the coolant will also result in over-heating. There's two or three bleed screws to asist in getting rid of any pockets
Congrats and welcome: Get a coolant system flush, check your fans, they should come on at 220 deg, or when you trun on the AC, check for junk in the front radiator.... good starting place
Well I feel like an idiot..the reason why it was over heating...no engine coolant. And the plastic housing is filthy. Is flushing an engine fairly simple task? :banghead:
