I'am looking for advice or any help with the following problem. I had the motor rebuilt and it used a quart of oil every 300 miles. They used molly rings. After 2,000 miles they pulled the motor and put steel rings in. I now have 3,000 miles and still use a quart to 300 miles. My car is an '84. Every one seems to think the intake is cracked and not visible to the eye.
Did it happen before? Does it burn it, leak it, or both? And who is everyone? Ya know, they have to take that off to do the work. If "everyone" thinks it's broke, maybe they did it.
Wow! A quart every 300 miles? That thing must smoke like a freight train. I had an '84 Trans-Am that had bad valve guide seals that only burned a quart every 5000 miles and it would give a big puff when first started.
Check your plugs for deposits. If it is rings it will usually only show on one or more cylinders but, not all eight.
Also, does it smoke on accelleration or decelleration?
it does not smoke any time when driving or starting. It does not leak a drop anywhere. The number 6 spark plug does have a little oil but not drenched. It did not burn oil before the over haul. It started missing and running real rough. They started lookin it over and found out that the number 6 piston had been replaced and when they got into the motor they found evidence that the motor had gotten hot. I drive it and it runs great. I went to Wichita yesterday which is 185 mile round trip and it cruised down the highay like a dream. The next step I think is to run some die thru it and see what shows up.
It has right at 2700 miles since the second time it was overhauled. Yes we do have hills in Kansas believe it or not. I've caravaned to Wichita to the corvette club meeting and the ones following never mentioned it smoking. There is no residue on the back of the car either, which I'd say it is burning it in the catalyt converter. I guess we'll try the die before any thing else and see what that brings.
