When buying a vette, any age from 1989 - 1991, which transmission is going to be most reliable? We assume that no major work has been done to either, and that both have had at least routine service performed per chevy specs.

If you are looking for a Vette, I think most guys perfer the ZF6 (manual shift) while staying away from the 4+3. The 4L60s and 700s are pretty tough, but they're not as much fun.
Thank you for the title fix. There's nothing quite like the feeling of "showing your underwear" in public. Hopefully this will limit the damage to just a few thousand observant members. (haha) At any rate, I do appreciate the feedback. I am just itching to buy my vette, but I don't want to make a $9,000.00 mistake

Didn't I read somewhere that the clutch and ZF 6spd tranny in the LT1 were originally designed to handle the greater torque and power of the LT5 engine? If so, it should be pretty reliable with an LT1.

A stick tranny can stand up to abuse better then an automatic. :smash:
but clutches do wear out
This is another of those chicken and egg thingies. I will venture that given equal care both will last in the 150k range. Yes "sticks" are more fun to drive but the more "fun" you have the smaller the 150k becomes. Clutches are not cheap and dual mass flywheels bring on sticker shock. Then again rebuilding a 4L60E isn't exactly cheap. Buy what you like and will have the most fun with. Thats what these cars are for in the first place.
I had an auto for 4 years, and sold it to get the GS. After driving the stick for all of 5 minutes I dont know why I ever got the auto in the first place. Sticks are oh so fun to drive.:D
