Default Console removal---Need help

As a relatively new vette owner ('87 auto. with 20,000 miles!) I am need of help from the veteran vette owners.
The plastic piece that shows gear indicator(park,Drive etc.) has come unfastened. I assume that this was simply glued in place. I know there are screws on top of the console and in the armrest console that must be removed by this still does not allow for the complete removal.
Proper instructions as to how this is done (step by step for the "thick") would be appreciated.
Also, a friend wishes to change the gear boot, so this and anymore instruction for that would be great.
Enjoying the forum!

If I remember correctly, you first have to remove the radio/AC trim piece. Use a flat-head screwdriver and pop out the button on the gearshift. Down inside the gearshift **** is a snap-ring that locks it into place. Remove the snap-ring with a pair of snap-ring pliers and pull the **** off. If you've removed all the screws, the console piece should lift off. You'll have to reach underneath the console piece and unplug window & seat controls to completely remove.

Hope this helps.

:iagree: that just about says it all... just a couple of notes... Careful with the snap ring, it does have a tendcy to fly so be careful... 2. the **** sometime does not just come off and a wiggle with pulling up definately helps.. 3. make sure you have all the screws on the Radio/AC trim, don't miss the ones on the driver side top and pass side top, and carefully remove they are old.. other than that its a simple thing... the boot just screws on to the plate and the drive indicator glues on...

Also, I had to remove the screws from the dash bezel and slide the bezel slightly to the left to allow access to the upper left screw in the radio/AC bezel.

The lighter! Almost screwed mine up forgeting that. Inside the console on my '85, under the "carpet" was 4 caps covering more screws. And by the way, if you find this broken here, take some washers and grind flat spots on 2 sides. Put the screws back in with these and your console will be snug again. My Grandpa used to say "poor people have poor ways" :D

Boy the reponse here is wonderful. Thanks so much. Driver's Pwr seat controls are in front of armrest/console area. Will it simply lift off over these buttons that protrude?

Yes, the buttons stay down-also you will have to pull back on it (maybe put the car in neutral) to get the lighter unplugged-I took mine off today but its a manual, shoud be about the same though
