I just "inherited" a 1986 early S/N 8166 Vette coupe in reasonably good shape, but not used for some time after a relative decided to park it and start to "upgrade" it. In the time it sat, the keys were lost...who knows how these things happen??? So do I have to pay a locksmith the outrageous quoted price of $200.00 to make a set of keys for this car, or is there a way to order keys from GM by means of identification on the vehicle???
Would such info be on the "tank sticker"? This is undisturbed, so if the factory put it there, it's most likely still there! Any advice is appreciated! :(
About 6 months ago I lost the only set of keys I had for my 2000 Chevy pickup. I was suprised to find out that the dealer can cut another key by using the VIN number. I had to show proof of ownership, etc., but no problems. I don't know how far back they can go but it will only take a phone call to find out!
Good Luck!
Hey, I really appreciate your advice! I thought maybe the dealer could help, but guess I will have to go to a larger dealer...the parts guy at ours just gave me a blank look and said call a locksmith...I wonder if they have a kickback deal going on???
Again, it's great to have a group like the Forum to go to with the tough ones!

The Chevrolet dealership should be able to cut you a new VATS key from the VIN... :yesnod:
