Cat-back system
I keep hearing references to "Cat-back" systems when talking mufflers and pipes. What are they? my guess is the "cat" part has to do with the catalytic converter, but I'm just a dumb stockbroker, not a C4 technician. Can someone please give me a first grade education......???
Well maybe we can make a deal. Any good stocks to buy?
The cat back systems are complete exhaust systems from the Cats back to the tips. This way you keep your emissions untouched, but you usually get a better sound and a few more ponies. So much for cat back 101. Test tomorrow. :D
Now that you mention this... a few more ponies meaning you get a few more hp from a cat back change for example from stock to Corsa? I was wondering about the process of removing the restrictions with Corsa if you actually noticed any change.
When you all say cat back your meaning bolting to the catalytic converters back to the exhaust tips correct? Which means the emissions is handled up to the output of the cats?
I saw a cut away sample of the Corsa vs. stock at Eckler's recent gathering. I was amazed at the restricted design of the stock mufflers. I've been thinking about putting this on my list of next to do.
Indeed the cat-back consists of the rear Y pipe (the front of which bolts up to the rear of the cat), the two mufflers (or muffler elims) and the tips that project from the rear of the mufflers.
Replacing the stock cat-back with a free-flowing system results in a more agressive exhaust note as well as a HP gain.
Prices can range from a few hundred bucks to over $1400. As far as HP, Most advertise 10 to 15 HP gain at the wheels. This is one of those things that you get what you pay for.
