Well, the C6 is almost with us, used C5's are becoming much more affordable, dealers in Dallas are selling Z06's for $9500 off MSRP.... ...and by choice I'm staying with my C4.
When I look at her, she is a great looking vette. Trim lines, good paint and interior, sounds great and her mods, considering her weight to HP ratio, have her running with the best on the street. I'm finished with performance mods and will only do things to increae her classic beauty. She is being increasinly refered to as a classic, is a joy to drive, gets admiring looks and waves from all kinds of drivers, and she is mine.
She'll be my short commute daily driver for another 3 years. Then she'll become my garage queen, joined by a new vette; or become the pride and joy of my 25 year son the auto mechanic.
Waxing sentimental, but just wanted to say my C4 has a home for life.
:yesnod:
Nowadays unless you have a huge down payment or a great trade in(definitely not a C4) to buy a C5 or C6, you are going to have a mortgage payment for a car.
That's why I'm sticking with my C4's, C5 will probably be next to add, but hopefully not before I get my midyear.
I know what you mean :) Even though it'll probably be a while before I can get another Corvette, I've still got a couple more C4s to get before I think of getting another generation. While a C2 or BB C3 would be cool, or even a C5 or C6, I still want a GS vert and a ZR1 first :yesnod: :auto:
I love my 89 coupe. I still get admiring glances whenever I take it out for a spin. Dads in minivans get this priceless expression on their face when they see my car, and yesterday this woman yelled "you're beautiful!" at me. Last week this guy yelled "hey, you're driving the American dream!" I really love this car, it looks great, it handles great, and it's a blast to drive. I'm going to keep this car forever, even if I buy a C6. This car will always be my baby.
Every time I open the garage door, I get a thrill just knowing that the beautiful 93 40th Anniversary coupe sitting there is actually mine. I've been driving Corvettes since 1964 and have owned more than a few. For me, it is the perfect car. Now, if the C6 photos are correct on the opening page of this forum, to me, there is a retro look about the new model. I think someone "corporate mavens?") agree that the C4 has it all. Hatchback, tail-flip, round tailights? Hmmmmmm... ;)
By the time you finish doing what you set out to do when you bought your vette you will never make anywhere near the money you put into it if you sell it. It would be insane to sell it or trade it in for anything else! Just going to have to have the wife move out of the garage for the next addition to the vette family!
I came to the same conclusion last week myself. I don't care for C5 coupes but i have to admit i do like the C5 verts and they are getting cheaper by the day. But the interior sucks in those cars and i think there are three main reasons i am keeping the C4 for a LONG time:
1) There really arent that many you see here in the northeast in nice shape. Sure i see beaters here and there but outside of a car show i rarely see another nice well kept C4. It's like a rarity on the road especially a convertible. I like how it is kinda getting "Classic" so to speak. Also C5's are a dime a dozen around here. I think there is more of a "wow" factor when you see the nicely maintained C4 then one of 10 C5's on my way home from work.
2) The more i own it the more it is customized to me. Little cosmetic changes, new gears, put a new tranny in, etc. Why would i sell it (i don't have the room at this point for 2 vettes) after putting all of this time money and effort into her.
3) The C4 vert with top down will ALWAYS look good no matter what come out. I think it is a timeless design. Has a mix of curves and angles. It's not just a big bubble.
In a nutshell she's a keeper. I am 26 and this is the pretty much the exact corvette i lusted for all through my teens and now i own it. Just because something new comes out doesn't mean i have to have it. If i really wanted to i have the means to buy a C5 or C6 but would it really bring that much more enjoyment? Probably not. Just large car payments i could do without. To be honest if i were to but another vette it would be a 96 LT4 Vert not a C5 or C6.
I'm going to try my best to hold onto mine, but as someone starting a family, the pass airbag and 2 seater nature of the car, it will be a challenge...
I agree with Mr Mojo. A huge down payment on something that goes down the second you take ownership. Take that money and make more money with it. Mine will last me a long time. I put on a 1500 or so miles a year and it only has 25K on it. It doesn't see rain or snow. I would like to keep it for my daughter (which is 5). I feel up here in the north we have roughly 5 bad months. Let someone else take the huge loss. What will I gain by buying a new one or even another one? As it's going mine is looking better because it's yesterday's Corvette and you're getting to see less of them anyways.
Wow, I can't believe the overwhelming favoritism to everyone's C4. I am in complete agreeance. I've wanted a C5 (though I despise the interior) and was going to get one.
HOWEVER, since my '95 vert is paid for, the engine is the way I want it, the trans done, gears, wheels and tires perfect, why would I want to incurr a 600+ car payment?
Not to mention the fact that I really think the C4's lines are classic. Sleek and Sexy....
From the few pics of the C6 I've seen to date, I might consider one a few years down the road but it would be in addition to a C4 and not as a replacement. The only way I'd sell the 96 I've got now is to replace it with a ZR1. BTW, C4DC, no need to get rid of the Vette on account of that natural urge to procreate - there's a kit (and I believe it's from GM) to disable that passenger side airbag. No too long ago, there was a link to info and illustrated directions. When I get a chance, I'll see if I can dig it up...
I feel the same way guys! Last year when I bought this '96, I could have found a '97, or waited a year for the C5s to start dropping...but man, how could anyone not like a '96 CE Vert with the LT4???? :steering:
"I'm going to try my best to hold onto mine, but as someone starting a family, the pass airbag and 2 seater nature of the car, it will be a challenge..."
Yup, I KNEW I saw something on that passenger side air bag disable thing - there's a how-to in the Jan 2004 issue of Corvette Fever. If you're interested, IM or email me and I'll scan it and pass it on to you (or anyone else for that matter)...
HA! If you think I'm going to sell my dream car, you're !! I've lusted after my Z for 10 years! The C5 doesn't have my desire like my old C4 does
