my engine bay is in bad need of a cleaning . My question is, what would be the best overall cleaner to use for the job. any and all suggestions would be appretiated, thanx. :steering:
First of all nice Vette. If you do a search of archived articles on cleaning engines I bet you will find alot of good information. There are alot of guys in here that have posted before about how they clean their engines. With some of the pics that went along with the posting they know what they are talking about.
then after you get all done, warm the engine (slightly) and spray Armorall tire cleaner everywhere under the hood, close the hood, wait about 20-30 minutes and wipe any excess. This isn't my idea, somebody else on CF, but it works. I don't where all the junk goes, but th engine compartment shines
First, get the engine a little warn but not full operating temp. Turn it off and spray it down with a cleaner/degreaser. Most people on here prefer Simple Green but I like Power Clean. Its a little cheaper and I think it works better. Go get a cold one and let it soak for about 20 mins then hose down with low pressure water. You may have to repeat this process and scrub down some dirtier spots depending on how dirty your engine is. Let it air dry then spray all rubber/plastic parts with "No Touch" tire sray. This process works great.
I agree! I do about the same, then do the previous post w/ the ArmorAll. Works great. Great way to get rid of my old ArmorAll too - until Zaino comes out with an Engine Cleaner and Egine Conditioner. ;)
I see from your profile that you have a '91 so your in luck..........no opti spark. When I clean my L98 I just cover the distributor with a plastic bag spray liberally with simple green or similar cleaner and pressure wash the heck out of it. I've had no problems using this method. After drying use some type of rubber dressing on the black parts under the hood and it should look great.

Re: engine bay help! (redhotandrollin)
Well from my memory, I think you said that was a 91 you have there, so no need for opti protection. Simple green works great on some areas like the runners and plenum(don't use it under the car though). On your valve covers I recently discovered a product that works awesome to remove grease and dried oil deposits. It's actually a brake cleaner product from a company called Albany. Works awesome to stop brake squeaks BTW. You can actually use it on your calipers/rotors and such without disassembly. Just spray it on and let it dry for like 10 minutes. They say its ok to use on engine bay hoses and stuff too. Best part is it like eats the grease away without any need to wipe. Like all products though, since these are vettes that we're working on, I would always use gloves and spray the product on a towel or cloth before applying to any engine bay area. It also prevents any mistaken sprays in the alternator or IAC motor which could potentially be very...very bad. It's never a good thing to mix any liquids with electricity obviously. (Interesting fact though: Fuel even though in liquid state, will not conduct or carry any electric currents. I was told by my mechanic that there is electrical equipment that sits in fuel in just about every c4 corvette near the distributor...wierd.)
