I a white 85 Vette thats has been painted twice.I am down to the first coat and I am having hard time taking off the OE paint. I have used PPG and Martin Senior Paint remover with out much luck does anyone have any tricks to help me out.
Do a search in the archives. I know Mid America sells some stuff that comes highly recommended and won't hurt the gelcoat. I've heard guys say they go real slow, one section at a time, and the stripper just takes the old paint right off. I think most use either a razor blade (have to be real careful not to gouge) or a plastic scraper.
Captain Lees Paint stripper...won't harm Gelcoat I've used it for years. You can get it through Ecklers I think...I get it from the factory...There is a small trick to using it ....Mix it 75%Stripper to 25% Ammonia and it works great.
Thank's for the info I order a gallon of Capt. Lee's Paint Stripper and talk to the owner.I wondering what type or brand of Ammonia do you use is it full stregth? Any info would be helpful thanks.
I was trying to remove some stubborn body molding adhesive from a Camaro I had without damaging the paint underneath and was having no luck. I went and talked the body/paint guy at the Auto Hobby Shop on base and he recommended I try some plastic razor blades. He told me the only place I would find them would a body shop supply place in the local area. I went and picked some up and they worked like a charm. They look just like a real razor blade but they were made of orange plastic. I think they should work great on the fiberglass and be safer than real razor blades.
When using stripper, Place it on with strokes going in one direction and do not go back over the old stipper if it has been longer than 10-15 seconds since you appliad it. The air activates the chemical reaction to seal the top of the stripper. This is to help with the chemical process of removing the paint.
If you go back over it . You mix the top layer into the rest. This can cause the rest to start yo dry out or deactivate if you will. Making the stripper very slow or not work at all.
Try not to use any metal for scaping. Any marks you make. WILL have to be delt with later. Good luck.
