im looking at buying a c4 vette, with the broad years of the c4, im sure chevrolet had sub-generations within these years (As far as 1988-1992 had this or that and previous didnt).....what are the major differences between c4 models? thanks.
There were 2 body styles (84-90 & 91-96). These were basically cosmetic changes, only the front and read bumper covers were altered.
The were 2 dashboard styles (84-89 & 90-96), with a sublte restyle of the second generation in '94.
On the mechanical side:
There were 5 engine options, all fuel injected - L83 (1984 only), dual throttle bodies with 205HP; L98 (85-91) multiport fuel injection with 230-250HP ; LT1 (92-96) multiport (sequential after '94) fuel injection with 300HP; LT4 (96 only) sequential fuel injection with 330HP; and the LT5 multiport fuel injection with 375-405HP.
There were 3 transmission available - 4 speed automatic (all years); 4 spd manual (84-88), with overdrive in 2,3 and 4 giving 7 forward ratios (known as the 4+3); and a 6 spd manual (89-96).
As well as the aforementioned major changes, there were continual "lesser" improvements made every year. For this reason, most folks will tell you to get the newest vette that you can afford (other things being equal).
King...after you do all of your research..get out there and look at some different C4's so you can see and feel the differences. I would look at a late 80's or early 90's, and then several different years in the 90's. Good luck with your search. :)
