I've got a rattling flexplate on my 88". Any ideas what the fix is, are there bearings inside that could be damaged? I'd like to have some idea before I talk to a mechanic. Thanks beforehand :)
You might check to make sure the torque convertor bolts are tight. Also they will make a noise similar to a rod knock if the flexplate is cracked. Good luck
Only fix is to replace the flexplate (because the holes will be rounded). When bolting up the new one, use red locktite, as the factory should've done...
Thanks everyone. Yeah, I can rattle the thing with my hand a little. Doesn't seem to be too expensive of a job right? :chevy
They will charge you for R&R of the trans, a good mechanic will slide the trans back on screw studs and get a long 11/16 wrench and remove the flex plate and replace it. It can be done in 45 minutes and charge for 3+ hour job.
My old 78 had a flexplate start makin noise on me. i crawled under it and removed the dust cover to find that the flexplate had broken. the part that bolts to the crank had sheared off from the outer ring that bolts to the torque converter. the knockin i heard was the steel plate poppin in and out of itself. the only way it still ran was that the breaks werent perfectly round so it'd bind and turn the tranny.. it was a simple fix new flexplate and about an hour to replace. worked fine.
