You can swap it out no problem...You have bad gauges ??? I'd check my connections before I bought another unit....Unless you've doen some wire swapping and smoked the unit I haven't seen very many that have had serious problems.I've seen a few with some bad/corroded connections but never a truly burned display ...for the 90-96s that is.
Well, if it is the same as the rest of GM vechiles, if you swap out the cluster, it will have different miles on it. I talked to my Chevy dealer about swapping out my guage cluster in my 01 Silverado for a white faced kit, and they said that if I swapped just the FACEPLATE, that it was ok, but the actual guage cluster would have 0 miles ( providing it's brand new ) on it, and wouln't reflect my actual miles.
Now, that's not to say that older GM vechiles are the same way, but I would think it's similar like back in teh day when the analog guages with odometers were all like that as well.
Feel free anyone to correct me on this. I'm a bit curious myself.
