New rear emblem......
I just got a new rear emblem for my car and wanted to know of any ideas of getting the old one off.......not sure how it was put on as it is an 85 and had 2 owners before........Also...should I use some type of glue to put the new one on or just use the sticky side already provided...thanks :auto:
When I replaced them on my 95 I used some heavy duty thread. Sort of like piano wire that body shops use. (my dad happens to be a tailor)I slid the thread back and forth to cut it out. I also softened the tape as I went with a blow dryer. I'm assuming also that your old ones are held on with 2 sided tape as well. Then once I got it free I used another body shop product called 901. It's a liquid that they use to clean the body and yet it doesn't harm the paint. Oh and it will strip the wax. I'm sure you can find something else a local car parts place that will help as well. Lots of rubbing the tape and finally got it all off the body. It was a bit of a bear but then again I wasn't smart enough, because if I was I would have asked this forum first. They may have an easier way.
I used the 2 sided tape that my new ones came with and they are working fine. Hope this helps
I have heard of others using the product, "Goof Off" to get the adhesive backing off of paint. I bet it is similar to the 901 you used. It also strips wax. I have also heard of peanutbutter working, but I'm not willing to try. :skep: Anyway, fishing line will work - dental floss will not! And the hairdryer plan is about the only way I know of to get the adhesive soft enough. Best of luck!

Re: New rear emblem...... (MRSQTIP)
When I pulled the old acrylic letters off of my '92, I ended up using a citrus based product like Goo GONE. I posted a thread on it several weeks ago on C4 general and got some very good tips!
Good luck ...it may not seem like it...

Spray WD-40 around the edges of the emblem. let it soak in for a few minutes, then use the fishing line. The WD-40 dissolves the glue and keeps the fishing line from sticking to it.
Use your favorite car washing soap to clean the WD-40 off, wax and apply the new emblem.
We used to use mineral spirits to get the 2-sided tape off of mirrors when I worked in the custom glass and mirror field. Not sure how the mineral spirits would do with your paint though.
