Re: Average stopping distance? (vette92_1)
Wondering what the average stopping distance is for a C4 w stock 12" rotors and calipers?
I used my GTech Pro and it said 143 ft 60-0. Does that sound about average or am I way over. I was thinking that C4's were around 125ft.
Anyway I am checking my distance now to compare it to when I install my C5 Z06 front brake upgrade along with a bias spring for the rear.
Chris, you will be overwhelmed! I find my self embarassed when I first drive the vette on weekends after driving my Z28 all week(and it has good brakes)
I find myself approaching the same red lights, applying the brakes at the same time (till I remember I am in the vette) and stopping so short of the light, I have to kind of roll on up.
In my tests, I am 60 to 0 in about 115 feet or less. But you have to "punch" the brakes hard. ABS likes that! Don't play with the pedal, don't tap it, slam it! And hold it hard as you can! That's different for those of us worried about locking up the brakes!
My biggest concern is watching the rear view mirror to see if the driver of the minivan behind me realizes that I am decelerrating at a rate they have probably never seen :D
I got a packet from a company called MXC International or something like that. It's copies of GM's original documents for the 1984 Corvette and lists stopping at like 117ft or 127ft. That's without ABS mind you.
Thanks guys for the feedback. I did some searching on the net last night, and found that my 143ft is at the worst of the average. Most #'s I found was between 125ft and 145ft for a 92 C4. Of course all of the #'s I found never said what break package was on the stock car for there test, as in stock 12" or the stock 13" J55 brakes. Plus I think I might have been able to stand on my pedal a little harder during my test, so I might could have gotten into the 13x ft range.
I am sure I will see a complete change with my upgrade. Thanks to all.
