Every Sunday I go out and wash my 87'. So I moved my parents cars so I could pull mine out of the garage. When I went to start it up, the VATS would not let me:mad ??? I know the battery is not dead because it has done this once before.... The first time it did not start I thought it might have been the key so I went and bought another one, but I guess not . So, what could it be? Thanks for the help!
When mine acted up, I could temporarily fix by cleaning the lock cylinder inside contacts with a q-tip and alcohol. I eventually had the lock cylinder replaced.
Well 10 minutes later I went out and tryed it again and started right up. :skep: While I was washing my Vette I think every car slowed down to look at it. :yesnod: :yesnod: Since it is a C4 I never thought people would check it out so much.
I just got a Corvette Central catalog in yesterday and they had a bypass that you can switch the VATS system on or off. It sells for $55.... Not too bad.
Replace with same one as you listed... and it works great, VATS enabled, total disable, or NO Vats.... so if your key dies, you switch to NO VATS and away you go...
This is a problem on early C4s and I believe that Chevy made improvements in '88. My friends '86 was doing the same, then got progressively worse and wouldn't start in damp/humid weather. He was so afraid of being stranded that he used to leave the car unlocked so that the VATS would stay inactive. Ultimately he replaced the ignition lock cylinder and had a new key made, and the problem dissapeared. The new lock cylinder and key were ~$70 (not including labor), but this should be a reasonable DIY.
