I want to replace the fuel filter on my 96 LT1, Is it a easy task? If I take it in to the shop what is a fair price to pay for the job. I see that the filter only cost $15. :flag
Just make sure you use backup wrenches. If the filter's been there awhile, it's going to be tough to get off. And it's real easy to strip the lines. Otherwise, as said, it's an easy job.
Also, make sure you depressurize the fuel system. That means you have to pull the fuel pump fuse, start the car, and let it run out of gas. Then, you're good to go. Failing to do this will spray fuel everywhere. Not good.
If you have a fuel pressue guage with the bleed off button you can depressurize the system with it. Or a screwdriver and some shoptowels. Just make the motor not hot.
It's a bit trickier on the LT1 because of the passenger side cat.
You may find it easier to disconnect the rear fitting, pull the fuel line in to the engine bay and rest the filter/line on the tire. Then you have easy access to the front fitting.
As mentioned, make sure the car is cold since you will have gas fumes everywhere.
