Has anyone here had any experience with the Doug Rippie or Exotic Muscle roll bars? Or any others? Is one of better quality/stronger than the other? How hard are they to install?
I went with the EM rollbar. It is high quality, and not too difficult to install -- keeping in mind that this is not a simple bolt in. Cutting and welding are required....

Re: Roll Bars (Gary96LT4)
Check R&D Racing...some guys are using their new roll bar.
Got mine from Dave, at http://www.r-dracing.com.
Great fit and finish, and customer service.
What can I say... A beautiful setup you've got there.your motor looks awesome!!! I love your attention to detail!!!!
Do you totally have to dismanlte the inside rear interior of the car..? How long does it take to install?
I was kindof put off by the DRM bar as it has the claim "This is not for roll over protection..." Ok, than I guess it's not what I'm looking for then...

Yes, you have to remove some of the carpet to cut and weld. Install is not very long if you have somebody who is good at welding.
I don't think anybody claims them being for roll over protection. Just a liability issue if somebody is out racing and rolls their car.
Not trying to dis' anyones product... I'm sure they're all about the same.. at least they look that way and are built out of very similar materials... Did you notice an increased improvement in chasis stiffness? I'm gonna need all of the help I can get... Like you I used to have a 1990 ZR-1... what a great car ... I wish I still had it for a daily driver....
With the combination of my EM four point AND the EM Harness Bar, the car is very stiff, even with the top off. This is saying something with me twisting it with a blown stroker. I know it is unrelated, but it even seems to launch straighter when it hooked up.
I could feel a difference the second I got in the car.
THe car is stiffer with the bar installed. As was said, no claim they are for rool over protection because of liabilty. R-D calls theirs the S/T Frame Support. Its made with "Manufactured from 1.75"x .120 wall, DOM tubing, the frame is a direct bolt in installation with provided instructions". Although you could weld it in. Check their web site for more info or call Dave: http://r-dracing.com/stframe1.htm
You have to remove the seats, rear carpet and insulation. Then cut two holes for the rear down bars. Bolt/weld it in. Helps to have a helper get it in/out. Then you have to cut two holes in the carpet and your set. Thats the installin a nutshell. There are a few smaller steps.
Speaking of stiffness.. When I brought my car home (my wife, myself, our two small children (ages 2 and 4 at the time, and our dog) got in my F350 crew cab and headed to San Fran from Indy to pick up my car).. Left on a Monday morning and got back late Thursday night...the car had no motor or suspension of any kind (well actually it was in pieces in the back of my truck). I brought it home resting on top of a homemade wooden dolly made by the prior owner that I would have bet my last dollar would have collapsed immediatey upon my departure...(See my Procharged Big Block in the forced induction section for pictures of the finished product) Anyway, I get the car home and had to get it off of this dolly which raised the car about 2-3 feet off of the ground.. I'll save you the details, but let's just say that the car ended up taking a fall onto the garage floor from about one foot up... it didn't fall straight down it just kindof slid over.. The only thing it hurt was my pride and one of the fiberglass storage compartments in back of the front seats.. Apparently when you jack one tire up in front the other one also raises.... who knew?

Thanks Jeff,
Not trying to dis' anyones product... I'm sure they're all about the same.. at least they look that way and are built out of very similar materials... I know, just thought I'd give you the heads up on why the claim not for rollover crashes.
I haven't hada chance to drive mine. I won't be able to until May when I go pick it up. It'll be completely different. Roll bar being added as well as coilovers. :hurray:
And yep, you should have kept the ZR-1. Nothing sounds or drives the same.
If you just want to add stiffness, check out R&D's site. They have a cross brace, camber bar and cross frame that you could add to stiffen the chassis. The cross brace and camber bar are very easy to install and did a heck of a job tightening up the chassis. Are you looking for roll-over protection? If so, do a search on roll bars in the archives. I remember seeing some guys who had 6 and 8 point bars installed in their Vettes.
Yes, I'd like to have some roll over protection, but this is a street car and will stay that way... no 6 or 8 point cages wanted here....I'm thinking a four point and the cross brace would be enough for me, although my car is lowered to I'm not sure the cross brace will work.... we'll see.. Thanks everyone for you input!
I got my 4 point bar from I/O port. It was far less expensive than the ones from the other distributors around. Has the same tubing size and type. Yes, you can't put a price on saftey, but you can shop wisely. Met reg's for various race groups, including the Silver State Classic.
Unit looks to be well made, Not fully installed yet though. Was one of the few that will fit my convertible and allow use of the soft top. only down side was slow production and shipping, about 5 weeks. you are told this up front, so it's not a suprise. Ands its made in the USA :flag
Thanks! I'll check this out as well as I like the looks of your bar.. does that angled cross bar get in the way of your vision?
Thanks,
Tony
Absolutely it gets in the way, but I've also got an EM rollbar and it is sturdy, but yes, your rear view mirror vision will be altered by the crossbar and top bar.
