Default service engine light question

Once in awhile, when driving in a heavy rain, the "service engine" light comes on in a '96 vette with LT-4. The light stays on til on a dry day the car is taken out for drive on the highway for 1/2 hour or so. Then the light goes out. No drivability problems at all. No funny smells, hesitations, jerks, or any other detectable mechanical malfunction. Has anyone else experienced this? I have been told it may be a "bad sensor" rather than a real problem. What do the rest of you think? This is happening to a car I am considering buying.

No. Since this is not my car I didn't want to get into it too far at this time. I just thought someone else may have encountered something similar. It goes without say that IF I decide to buy this car, I will have to allow some cash for a repair - at least parts. I had an older chevy caprice that would occasioally show a check engine light during very humid days / evenings. After awhile the light went out. I took it to chevy and they said "don't worry about it. All sensors are hypersensitive to moisture." Just wondered if this was a similar situation.
