Default Transmission Help

Hey guys,
I have a 1986 coupe, 55K origional miles, burgendy with some pretty nice wheels. My problem is the transmission will not go into park. The tranny shifts fine and hits all the other gears perfect, but when you put the car into park it is still in reverse and wants to go backwards. I check the transmission fluid on a regular basis and have never had a problem of leaks. The car has been running perfect up to this. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Two ideas, both of which will most likely require some egg-spurt help. Problem could be a simple shift cable adjustment. Its easy to do but best left to someone who knows how. Problem could also be in the adjustment of the parking pawl inside the tranny. This adjustment is done when the trans is put together so it can't be fixed unless it is taken apart. Suggest you talk to your local transmission shop.

It would be my guess that it's the cable before it would be the parking paw. IT doesn't sound like it is SHIFTING into park. The parking paw is mearly a "brake" that locks the drum from turning. If it's not the cable, then it could be an internal leak in the hydroulic(sp?) system which would definitely need some expert know-how. Good Luck

In my case it was a kink in the cable.

That's along the lines what I'm thinking...

Did you maybe run over something??? I ran over a dead deer once on a very foggy night and the carcas ripped the linkage practically off the arm on the side of the trans... Everything was shifted up one position and I couldn't get the car into park...

What I did to fix it was loosen the linkage, manyally move the arm on the trans to the park position, move the shifter to park inside the car, then tighen the linkage back up... Other than a few pieces of dead animal and a new air dam I was good as new...
