....drove a 94 c4 yesterday that i want to buy. sat at idle for a few minutes and the temp rose to the peg just under the 260 mark....fan came on....took off and the temp came back to midrange. two years ago a new waterpump was installed and a new thermostat installed. engine appears and sounds as if it is running normally. my fear is how is this car going to handle summertime heat pulling an air conditioner? this car is a very nice, clean, impressive vehicle and the owner says that he had talked to someone with the same symptoms on his car. any ideas out there would be most welcome.....
should not go to 260. At 234 the fans should come on not at 260. Something is a miss. I wouldnt want a car where it has been at 260 at any time. Perhaps the sensor is reading wrong. Need more details.
260?!!?!?!?? At 280* the possibility of head warpage comes into play...and that is for ONE overheat session. Of course, the LT1 is reverse cooled but still...that seems a bit much. I would not buy this car unless I was prepared for major engine work ahead (head gaskets and head straightening). My $ .04 worth.
...guess i was unclear there where i mentioned "the peg"......i meant there is a mark below the 260..... that represents 235 if i remember correctly from the book.....that is where the fan comes on...
you need to see the digital readout to get an exact figure. Just press the guages button until it comes up as collant temp under the speedo. I kinda figured you were going by the analog guages that are not linear. It is probably operating as it is supposed to.
It is not at all uncommon nor does it hurt for the engine to rise to 230 and then cool down when the fans come on. In fact it was designed that way to do so. Sure some on here have tricks so that never happens but it is not a sign of something wrong.
BUT if the nuber goes over 234 or so (leave car running while stopped and let that baby heat up) then dont buy the car. 260 is dangerous.
