What do you use to get off what appears to be road grime but has the look of tree sap and I can't seem to be able to get it off. I went as far as...*cringe*...trying brake clean, but it wouldn't do it . It's not sap for the obvious reason that it's not under a tree and the spots are down underneath behind the front and rear tires. On the red paint, they appear to be a light brown color. Any thoughts? What's the most effective while still being safe for the paint?
try one of the clay bars, whether it is a blue magic bar or a mothers bar. those are the best two(zaino is good too).
use plenty of soap as a lubricant and gently rub the bar across the surface(think of a hockey puck on ice, that's how you'll know you're doing it right).
clay bars are excellent at removing surface contaminants that washing/buffing will not remove.
good luck and let us know how you make out.

:iagree: Remember, after using a clay bar you'll need to apply a coat of wax.

I know that kerosene works well to remove grease and road tar! i have used it many times with no damage to paint. I always put on fresh wax after cleaning off the kerosene.

Gasoline or kerosene work well and are gentle on your paint. They will strip the wax so you'll have to rewax. Make sure you don't use racing fuel. Some racing fuels will strip paint.

I'm going to have to try some of those ideas. I don't think it's road tar as I've never seen it this color. MAybe I'll bo out there tomorrow and macro a shot of it. It's very light in color, and you can hardly see it unless you're up close. I figure whatever I use, I'll be throwing a layer of wax on afterwards. In fact, weather's gettting better. maybe I'll just do the whole car :yesnod: .
Gotta love the way they look after a good wax job  .

I will tell you the old ziebart had the best products to remove that stuff, because they gave you some to remove excess undercoating!
Nowadays, here is what works for me. They are filling in pot holes and that stuff is all over the place. I use Bug&Tar remover by lifter a citrus formula and it's clear coat safe!
If it was sap you can wax the area let it dry and it will dry out the sap and then you can remove it gently it works. Then rewax the car and buff it out good. Been doing that for a long time, before we had a lot of the products today.
