I am noticing many things about my "new" vette that has me worried.....1) How hot should it normally get when idling in traffic? Today I noticed my temperature guage climbing and it didn't go back down until it almost got into the warning area or the car began moving at an acceptable speed. The air temperature was only about 65 degrees. 2) My passenger window stopped working today. Neither the driver side control or the passenger side control operates the window. It was fine yesterday. When I press on the control it goes down maybe a quarter of an inch and you have to hold the button down for a long time before it goes back up the quarter of an inch.
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. I have a 1996 LT1 and it only has 45000 miles on it. I think the biggest problem is it hasn't been driven much til lately. I got it 2 months ago and have put 6000 miles on it but it only had 5000 miles put on it in the last 6 years prior to me purchasing it. Thanks again for your anticipated help. :( :( :( :( :( :(
Sounds like your window motor is going up. You can get a new one for about $60 but the labor is not cheap. As for the overheating start by taking it somewhere that has a pressure flush. If you can not find one at a regular automotive service station around you they have it at every dealership. Then have them add some wet water with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water! This should do the trick unless it is more serious.
check the digi temp and report that reading.they run hotter than most other cars, especially idling at intersections.
turn the a/c on to help cool it (this turns the auxillary fan on)
my passenger door glass was working erratic when i first started driving it this summer, car had sat in a garage alot (92 with 31k on it),before i could troubleshoot the thing it started working fine.maybe yours will too. :)
and Hello! :seeya
My 1990 gets heated up that high when it is idling in traffic as well. From what I have read it is kinda normal in corvettes. I have just purchased a new thermo and fan switch to have the fans turn on sooner to keep the temp down. You might want to look into something like that if you are concerned about the temp. As for the window, . Good luck! :seeya
I would flush the cooling system... but make sure you also pull the radiator out to clean the front. Alot of debris accumulates between the A/C condensor and radiator. Vettes are bottom breathers, thus it acts as a vacuum and picks up bags, leaves, newspapers, etc.
Somewhere in the 230 range is the hottest you should see. If you haven't already checked, pull the radiator shroud and look in between the rad and condensor. The is probably a bunch of leaves and road debris.
If you search the archives for "cleaned radiator" you will probably (NOT prolly) find some eye opening pics of the debris that I am speaking of.
I installed a piece of screen in the area where the air gets sucked-uo from under the nose to keep the rad debris free.
Yep, I pulled the shroud on mine (87) was full of s&*t. I had an old vacumn with narrow extension, vacumned and flushed it with low pressure from the garden hose, 15-20 degrees lower :D
Temp should get to 230, fan should kick on and cool it down. If it gets much above 230 w/ out going back down something is wrong. Cruising temp should be between 190-200. I would suggest a good flush and refill and also cleaning in front of radiator. Good Luck, Guy
