Default Things to do in CA??

Hope this is in the correct section-

The wife and I will be vacationing in California early May, and wanted to hear from you Californians on things I must see and do..we fly into LA, then plan to drive the coast to San Fran, Sausalito, Napa then to Tahoe...(unfortunately I won't have the vette) We will be in CA for 2 weeks...She has all the wine country mapped out- but what else is a must to do?

Thanks! Hope to see some nice Vettes out there as well!

On your way up the coast to San Fran, there's Santa Barbara, Morrow Bay (beautiful), Carmel and Half Moon Bay (both are beautiful). If you want to see and experience the beauty of the Redwoods, I suggest the Muir Woods in Mill Valley, right northeast of San Francisco, on your way to the wine country. While in the wine country, try Calistoga, it's quaint and neat.

Have fun in Cali... :flag

Sounds like you already have an outstanding plan mapped out.
Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I make the
4 hour trip from San Jose several times each summer.

I would recommend a stop in Carmel and or Monterey. There are many
nice beach/ocean side restaurants and incredible sights. This ocean
area is 2 1/2 south of San Francisco. If you stop in San Jose you
might check out the Winchester mystery house.

On your way to San Francisco you will see plenty of vette wavers - especially C5's....in San Jose.

Enjoy your vacation on the left coast.

Tahoe, Reno, Yosemite, Bridgeport, Bodie California, Death Valley, Cannery Row, Santa Cruz, Big Basin, Ben Lomond, Hiway 9, Hwy 1, Fresno is really nice this time of the year as is Porterville, the Salton Sea is unusual as is Mono Lake, The Northern Sierras, Chuckchanski Casino Madera, The War Planes museum in Chino, theres so much to do and see in a state thats a 1000 miles long it would take a lifetime to see half of it.

Theres the QE1 in Long Beach, Disney Land in Anahiem, The Sprouse Goose,
Knots Berry Farm, Hollywood, Bel Air, Palos Verdes, The Coronado Hotel San Diego, The San Diego Zoo, the list goes on forever. http://www.visitLAnow.com
"Ya can come and visit but don't stay". In Oregon theres Mt. Saint Helans, Mt Mazama (Crater Lake) Black Butte, etc.
Two weeks aint near enough.
Enjoy.

It sounds like you have a great trip all mapped out. Wine country is great fun and relaxation. One thing that seems to be very popular with people who have never seen it is the desert. I take almost everyone who comes to visit California to Joshua Tree National Monument.

Hearst Castle is another popular tourist destination.

Do you scuba dive? CA diving is pretty good. Its very different than diving in the tropics. Its more wild and eerie.

The highest and lowest pint in the continental US are here in CA. And they arent too far apart. The driving in this area can be very beautiful this time of year.

Other than that, the obvious SF and LA attractions. :seeya

Interesting coincidence. The wife and I are flying out to San Diego the last week of April to see a friend and will be driving up the coast. Plan to stay at the Inn on Morrow Bay. :D

Hearst Castle is really nice,im surprised no one mentioned that.San Francisco is a great place to visit but personally I wouldnt live there for free.I live about 40 miles from there and thats not far enough.Be careful. One more place to check out is the BEUHRIG? AUTO MUSEUM in Danville. From what ive heard its amazing.Im not sure I spelled it right. Its Maybe 40 miles from San Francisco.I know they have at least one 53 in there.Enjoy your trip.

Thanks all! I am making a list of these places to make sure (if time allows) I can see most of them!

One post said "be careful" are there places I need to be aware of?

As for Bodie- I told the wife about it (also saw it on the Discovery channel) seems that people that take things from there have REALLY bad luck! (if you believe in that sort of thing)

I do have AAA and the books are on the way- we are just really looking forward to the trip- I hear the drive up the coast and Tahoe are beautiful...she wants to take a hot air baloon ride over Napa...anyone done that?

P.S. Where is the whale tail? SF?

Cheers!

Sure have. The baloon trip is something you shouldn't miss. Well worth it. Oh yea, one more thing; welcome to California and when you leave, take someone with you. Way to many people.

SF has excellent dining all over. Two of my must go to restaurants are:
* Yank Sing = excellent dim sum. You will want to make special trips to SF just to eat there for lunch. Off of market street. 415-957-9889
* Elite Cafe = superb Cajun food in a classic atmosphere. A great place to eat and drink and enjoy an evening.

It's the Behring Auto Museum.....and yes, it's fantastic. If you find yourself with a free evening in the San Fran area, post in the Pacific Section....... we quite often have get togethers at a local hamburger joint. Could be anywhere from 5 to 15 cars show up, and all we need is a reason to get out

Ya know ya can rent a c5 from Budget, it won't be cheep but maybe you can get a deal ! Check out the Santa Ynez Valley and there's a Chumash Indian Casino and hotel up there. Solvang the Dannish town is right there also. Just be careful on the 101 North of Santa Barbara, CHP patrols and they don't cut much slack.
If you can you might want to pack a Radar detector (no BS) :auto:
