Default question about 88 odometer?

A friend of mine has an 88 Corvette. He was concerned about his odometer display. It has relatively low miles (he bought it recently) and he was told the mileage may have been rolled back. Now he is concerned about the numbers on the odometer not lining up (you can see some of the numbers under the current ones). My 94 is digital, so Im not too sure, but are the numbers supposed to line up straight across? Pics would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

I believe that any attempt to roll back the analog-type odometer results in some sort of line appearing across the center of the display. Sometimes the little number wheels do not exactly line up but should as the wheel to the right makes a complete revolution (0 to 9).

The digital display odometer is controlled by the CCM (body computer) and I don't believe those numbers can be changed backwards without installing a new CCM. The dealer has to do that with a programmer to set the odometer to the original number and if the new CCM sees more than 100 miles racked up before the odometer is set, it cannot be set to the correct number.

Even though the 84-89 odometers are tamper proof, they can very easily be removed and replaced by a low mileage one.

I have an 88 with the same thing--the numbers don't line up evenly.
I thought it was tampered with, but no it wasn't.
I have 120K and before I bought the car I ran a Carfax, averaged 7k a year each year--no irregularities in the mileage--no gaps.
I also trust the last owner did not tamper with it, he was just a "Shine it & Drive it" dude. I also got years of maintenance bills matching the mileage.

No I would't worry about it. :steering:

The odometer is made up of geared wheels that engage each other. When you take it apart you can release each gear and then reengagge it to what ever reading you want. Most of these odometer have some misalignment due
to what people call gear slop.
The odometer on my 85 can be rolled back. The gears are held in place by a plastic studs that has been flared at the ends. This flare can be ground off and
the gears removed. When it is put back together it will need to be fastened to the studs another way.
