Took Sweet Thing on a short road trip in our '92 LT1 this past weekend, and on the way home we stopped for lunch.
Some folks pulled into the parking lot on bikes, and one guy was on a Hayabusa. Being a moto-freak myself (for the record: Y2K BMW K12RS & '03 ST4s Ducati) I walked over and yakked, checking the instrument panel on his bike (75 THOUSAND MILES!). :smash:
When I walked back to the car, my SO asked how fast the speedo goes on the Suzook. "Uh, I dunno, Hon... 2 hunnert-something..."
Then she asked how fast the speedo goes on the Vette. Since it's digital, I had to admit - I have no idea!
I "heard a rumor" that it makes it to triple digits, but where does it top out... 999?
I remember someone saying the digital counter would go up to 255. (from a post on here several months ago) To me this makes sense as this would be a simple 8-bit counter circuit/program loop.

:iagree:
:iagree:
11111111 - 255 in binary 8-bit
100000000 - 256 in binary 9-bit (Won't fit in an 8-bit counter IC)

From an article about the Callaway Sledgehammer by D. Randy Riggs, Vette Magazine, 1989... http://www.madwheels.com/sledgehammer/
"Even the digital speedometer read to 255 mph, the highest number you can generate with an 8-bit microprocessor. (Ironically, when the car reached its ultimate top speed, the speedo pegged and began counting down!)" :yesnod:

For some reason I remember hearing they only go to 199 then blink 000 when you get past that. I'll have to do some research. I don't know what year dash it was (89 style or 91)

it cracks me up that the "analog" in our cars only goes to 85. :D
I think that was GMs sneaky way of still following federal requirements.. Every car i've seenn from ~1985 has an 85mph speedo. My 85 Ford LTD has a 140 speedo, but that's because it was built for police use. :D
I think it's actually techincally 254. You can count from 1 to 255, but remember that it starts with 0. Seems like I read that somewhere anyway. It also seems like I read that when Callaway had the sledgehammer the speedo actually started counting backwards at top speed :)
Re: How high does the digi speedometer go? (Nathan Plemons)
well mine reads in km/hr but ive seen 275 20 times.... highest was 286. On the stands in my garage with no wheels in it i hit 344 km/hr before the slight vibration got to me. idid melt my pads and crack all the rotors after the slow down! :banghead:

I think those federal regs that put a cap on speedo numbers at 85 went into effect in the late 70's. I have seen some 78 Vette speedos that only read 85 if the base motor (L48) was installed. My 78 had the optional L82 and that speedo read 140. We have some club members with 79 thru 82 cars and those speedometers read 85.
