Okay, Im a canadian that bought a car with a clean title. I later found it was carfaxed with a couple minor accidents. I would have thought this would have been a salvaged title.
what is a clean title vs salvage, vs a rebuilt or whatever. thanks in advance...
ok clean title can have minor accidents a salvage title is just that the car was sold as a salvage (car was totaled) Rebuilt title is when the car was rebuilt to pass inspection after salvage.
Thats impossible to answer as each State has its own title laws. Each State defines total losses differently. For Example:
In Oklahoma a total loss is a vehicle more than 60% structural damage.
In Arkansas a total loss is a vehicle with more than 70% of market value in damage.
In some States a theft recovery is a "clean" title marked theft, in others it is a rebuilt title, in other it has no markings at all. Same thing goes for flood cars.
Generally speaking there are 4 categories of titles. Clean, rebuilt, salvage, and junk. Clean means no problems. Rebuilt means the title was once a salvage title, but the car has been rebuilt and passed some type of inspection. Salvage means the car was totalled but could possibly be rebuilt later. Junk means the car can never be rebuilt and put back on the street.
However, a clean title could be a car that had extensive damage, but was not a total loss by State definition. An Oklahoma car with 59% structural damage is not a total loss and has a clean title. Or a clean title could be a flood car that was "cleaned up" after the flood.
