Default Serpentine belt

Apparently need a new one of these in addition to the shocks, too. What's the deal here? I'm not thinking of doing this myself, but I'm curious to see if this is a "gotta go to the dealer" type of repair, or if I can just buy the belt and take it to any ol' shop and have them put it on.

BTW, what should one of these cost?

That may be the eaisest repair on a Corvette. Five minutes. Prices vary. A Gates Gatorback will run in the $30.00 range. A Dayco about a ten spot less. Have no idea what the Chebby Sto would rip you for. I am running a Dayco but am about to change to a Gatorback.

:iagree:
The belt routing should be on a decal on the radiator. You just use a 1/2
drive breaker bar in the belt tensioner located under the air compressor in the front to loosen the belt and replace it.

I believe it is a 15mm that you'll need if you use a breaker bar. I happen to have the correct belt tool which makes life real easy. 30 seconds tops.

Thats what I bought the belt tool, $40.00 came with 3 sockets and 3 crows feet, and a long bar and a short bar.
I 've used it on 2 cars now. Its a snap with the tool.

Yeah, the tool makes it much easier on the LT1/4. A regular ratchet will hit the crossmember. Darn GM.

:iagree: I have taken my belt of twice in the last week. Once to get rid of the frisbee and the second time to get rid of the air pump. Both times I used a regular breaker bar. It is a bit trickey positioning it for the first time but is simple enough that I would never pay anyone to do it for me. Plus the sticker showing how to put it back on helps too. If you have never done it before, I would set aside 9 minutes and 45 seconds to do it.

3 minutes to figure out how to get the breaker bar into the tensioner
30 seconds to remove the current belt.
5 minutes to place the new belt on and make sure you have it wrapped around all of the pulleys correctly
1 minute to double check your work and remove the breaker from the tensioner.
15 seconds to grab a beer and celebrate a job well done
