Default 17x11 owners step inside

Im fixing to buy new rubber for the rears and was curious what the absolute widest looking 315 is. From what I have seen so far the BFG looks the widest. Any other opinions? I would have thought one 315 would be the same as another...this is NOT the case

It is definetly not the case. I have 285s on my car that are narrower than the 275s they replaced. I was thining WTF? :mad

Umm... 315mm is 315mm. As long as you put them on an 11" rim it should look fine.

Do tires change shape and size, or fatten over time and use?

I took 275/45/17 Pilot Sports off the rear of my car when they were worn.
I replaced them with 285/35/18 Sumitomo HTRZ IIs on my new C5 wheels.
I expected them to be 10mm wider. This was not the case. If anything the 285s were narrower. The tires were close in size, but the 285 was definetly not wider.

What gives? Is this what I get for buying a cheap tire?

Sorry to hijack the thread...

:nonod: Actual sectionwidth and treadwidth will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer (and even model to model). Hoosier is known for building tires larger than the "advertised" specs.

The shape of the tire carcass, especially where the tread meets the sidewall (the shoulder), will also make a tire look wider or narrower as well. Some tires have rounded shoulders while others look more square.

Now it can be told. All 275s, or 285s or 315s are not created equal. One manufacturers can be noticeably wider (or narrower).

Actual tire size can vary considerably from the nominal tire size that you see on the sidewall.

Most tire manufacturers have the actual measurements on their websites with the other tech info. Check carefully.

I had a set of Avon ZZ1s and the tread seemed to come out a bit more and the side wall sat outward of the rim just a touch, before dropping in to the bead. Definately looked wider! I can't seem to find those tires anymore, but maybe you can.

Each tire is different. The firestone SZ50 looks wimpy compared to others' in the same size and the actual measurement shows they are not as wide. Some people brains can't register any difference between them all, but some can.

315s on an 11" rim look awesome period

I've got Nitto 555Rs on mine and love them, however, I doubt the tire manufucturer matters much as long as they're mounted on the 11" wheel. Just my .02

I agree with the diff mans are different widths. I have 315 Nitto 555Rs in the rear and 315 Potenzas in the front and the Potenzas ARE WIDER by about half an inch. I noticed after I had my tires balanced and they were about to get mounted on the car

 what are you trying to get at? No one here is saying you can't install 315's from any tire company on 11" wheels. :leaving:

Go to the TireRack and look up the tires you are interested in. Most tires will have a link to Specs | Warranty | Reviews | Survey Results .

Select the Specs link and look at the Sect. Width. and Tread Width and you will see where the actual differences are. For example the Dunlop SP Sport 8000 have a Sectional Width of 12.4" and a Tread Width of 11.5". GoodYear Eagle F1s have 12.3" and 10.1". Yokohama AVS Sports are 12.6" and 11.4"

You get the same effect on off-road tires. I had to look at different tires on different wheel sizes and carefully check the specs on each manufactures website before I plunked down $1000 + on big gnarly's.

So Dunlop makes a tire for the 11" rims? SP 8000s?

I was very pleased with the Sumitomo's I got...315/35/17's...picked them up from Tire Rack for under $150.00 each...they looked plenty wide on my car...I've since gone to Nitto Extreme DR's and they are fine too... good luck

Edit...I just realized the Sumi's are on my car in my sig pic... :banghead:

I just put on some Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s onto my car. Look really wide, they had worn out Pirelli's on it before. Plus the tread pattern looks great and wet weather traction is awesome. Dry traction is just as good as, if not signifigantly better, Kumho's I had on the 85. Its hard to tell as I can still break them loose with the new car, but most of that is due to 3.73s gears and a 3K stall converter.
