Default spoiler

Help, I am a recently new Vette owner (1986), just learning, was told I do not have a "spoiler" on the front, have part of a "groud effect" kit on sides, but no front spoiler and told I NEED one! I recently had the transmission pulled and worked on at a dealership, would they not have told me I need this missing part called a spoiler to keep my engine cooled, or is it possible they removed it to work on my car and forgot to put it back on??? Anyhow know? Thanks,
Paula

The front spoiler is an easy and affordable fix. Check Ecklers, part number 39007 or click here http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...JBR56WWE500439

If you have a ground effects kit and the front piece is missing, you need to figure out what ground effects set you have and buy the right part. You can also check Ecklers or Mid America Motorworks and others for these kits. I suggest subscribing to one or more of these mail order magazines. You'll be amazed at how much stuff there is. Just make sure to ask about it here before you buy so you don't waste your money.

Yup, it is actually an air dam and is needed for cooling purposes. Dont think anyone would have removed it to work on a tranny. See the link above.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

I took mine off a couple of weeks ago. I have a new set, havn't had time to install it yet.

I had no problem with overheating, today it was in the 80's.

You should have one, but no immediate problem if you don't.

A friend had his removed for awhile and he said his car didn't have any heating problems till he got on the highway. He thought it had something to do with the air flow at higher speeds. He said when he put the spoiler back on the ptoblem dissapeared. This is all hear say I'm just repeating what he told me.

That makes good sense if you think about it. For city low speed stop and go driving the air dam doesn't really come into play. You're not moving fast enough to get a good airflow through the radiator anyway and thus the cooling fans are doing all the work.

I think the cooling fans shut down at about 40 MPH. At sustatined speed above this I can see how there wouldn't be enough airflow in the front.

Welcome to the Forum  The air dam is something you should put on the list, but isn't an emergency fix unless you're overheating already. Post a pic if you can, so we can be sure we're talking about the right thing.

Check the Pacific Section for local get togethers (GTGs)in the Bay Area, people there can steer you straight. Welcome to the asylum

If its the stock front spoiler - center piece, here you go:

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...DC119J6FKEBK49

Eckler's sells alot of OE and aftermarket corvette items, ground effects kits included. Look for the correct kit and determine the center piece of the spoiler needed.

Good luck and welcome!

Caboboy, thanks for the info. I think I finally figured out how to attach a pic, whew! feeling a little inept here, anyhow can you see the bottom of the car, (I have other images if you can't see it) from what I understood the little side fins in front/behind my wheels has been added on, I was told I could complete the ground effect kit by adding onto the sides as well as the spoiler, OR just order the factory made spoiler, but just "GET a spoiler"! Anyhow . . . so far I am leaning toward the factory made one, as I was told I would be wanting to back into packing spaces that had a front curb with the ground effect one.

I am embarassed to be so uninformed when it comes to what I have in a car, all I know is I fell in love with it 7 years ago when a friend bought it down in Half Moon Bay and I said then if you ever sell it, give me first chance and HE DID! He took such good care of it, it came from a real good home, it has always been garaged. Only has 83,000 miles on it. In my eyes it is just absolutely gorgeous, I bought it March last year. I always wanted a vet, never thought I would actually get one, especially at this point in my life, but hey . . . figured better late than never. :-)

Do you have any advice on buying tires. I have been reading up on them, and am undecided between Goodyear, Goodrich, and Yokohama Avid's. I have 2 Goodyear and 2 Firestones on it now.

Obviouisly I have a lot to learn . . .thanks for all your help.

Well, I will defiitely be moving at more than 40 mph, so I think I better get the spoiler. Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate it.

Thank you for the info, I will check it out, I am undecided if I should continue with the ground effect kit or just get a factory spoiler. But, anyhow, thank you so much for taking time to help.

sounds ike you just are missing the center section of the stock 3 piece air dam.
cheap and easy fix.
hang around here for a bit and you'll be able to tell guys like that "its not a spoiler, its an air dam" :)
surprising the dealer didnt notice that missing part and recommend you get one.
if you dont wanna mess with freight or ordering just go by the dealer and have the parts pup take a peek at it.even at the gm counter the center section should only be about 25 bucks.
also you may be missing the screws which the dealer should have the correct ones anyway... might as well..
and WELOME! nice looking car!

Yep, I think you're right, I will just go to the dealership I went to for the transmission work, I think they were fair, and see about getting the "arm dam" put on there. The store I was at said I needed three pieces for the front at $30 each, if I wanted just factory. I guess they figured I knew I didn't have the air dam on there and so didn't say anything.

I will learn, it will just take me a while, there's a lot to know about these cars.

Yours is absolutely gorgeous, what a beautiful color, never seen that before.

Thank you for your advice and help, I really appreciate it.

It's part of the way the car breaths. ---having no grill for air the car is a
bottom feeder and needs the spoiler as an air foil to scoop up the air.
Replace it when you can---around $45.00
