My '85 vette speedometer only goes to 85 MPH. What does the speedometer read if you go past that? Does it just bury the needle? Haven't had a chance around here to go fast enough to find out.
The stupid 85mph speedo was a GOVERNMENT REGULATION :smash: :smash: :smash: Blame them, not the vette engineers. That law went into effect with the 55mph speed limit :mad They figured they could cap the top speed off at 85 if people's speedometers didn't read past that
And if you think '84-'89 speedo is bad, try looking at a late C3  At least with the digi dash, where there is NO NEEDLE  , once you go past 85 the digital part still reads your speed up to 200 or so.. I saw an '82 vette dash, it has an analog speedo with a needle and only goes up to 85mph  After that, it's your best guess
Just because an older speedometer stops at 85mph, doesn't mean it can't go faster :smash: Opposite is true for today's cars. Just because the speedometer goes to 120+ in your truck, doesn't mean it can actually do that.
When the stupid speed limit law was removed, so was the 85mph limit. They finally figured out that limiting the speedometer to 85mph didn't slow people down; it made them more unsafe because they couldn't tell if they were doing 90 or 110 or whatever
My dad's 46 Chevrloet pickup is marked to 100 MPH. Yeah right, that poor thing has a 3 speed, you can start in 3rd gear from a dead stop, anything over 25 MPH and you have to go for 3rd gear. I don't think it would go 100 MPH downhill with a tail wind. Once the engine blew up it would probably act as a fairly effective brake.
