WELL IT MIGHT NOT BE A REAL EMERGENCY BUT IT HAS BEEN BOTHERING ME!! FORUM MEMBERS I CANT FIGURE OUT WHY MY CAR KNOCKS & PINGS WHEN I ACCELERATE. I HATE THAT SOUND AND ITS QUITE EMBARRASSING. I WENT TO 92 OCTANE AND MIXED IN A FUEL ADDITIVE AND IT HELPED SLIGHTLY. A TUNE UP DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM EITHER. ITS GOING BACK TO THE MECHANIC FOR AN ENGINE CHECK. COULD IT BE THE TIMING OR BAD INJECTORS?? ANY INFO FROM THIS WONDERFUL SITE WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had an '86 that use to knock and ping all the time.
I finally changed to an Accel Super coil and Accel High Perf. Dist. Cap and Rotor and 8.8mm silicone Accel plug wires and the problem went away.
You yell EMERGNCY!! EMERGENCY!! for a pinging question? :mad
Not a good way to start off dude.
:iagree: Plus all caps are an indication of yelling or anger... so the caps.
I didn't notice the year of your car, and I haven't had the need or been brave enough to tinker with mine, but I'd definately address individually anything that would cause pinging. Timing (does the computer advance it too much on acceleration), fuel mixture, temps, etc.
thanks everyone for the info and the advice. i want to apologize if this newbie junior member ruffled any of you senior members feathers. that was not my intention. i have always enjoyed this forum and the members comments. anyway everyone have a wonderful weekend and keep on cruising.
That might sound absurb to some of you, but when I replaced my dual mass flywheel with a lightweight Fidanza unit, it rattled so bad if you lugged the engine, when going up hills that it sounded like pinging/knocking!
In fact for about a week thats what I thought was going on....
Let me be one to say sorry for jumping on the :nono: wagon. I sent an email once with totally good intentions, and because of use of caps and font color, got slammed and felt like schit. With that said, good luck in finding the problem. If I can't figure out the problem, I usually get so frustrated, that I want to sell the car, or bike, or what ever it is. Thankfully, my trusty vette has been relatively problem free.
Is there any chance the place you get your gas is selling chit gas?? There are a couple of stations around here that are notorious for selling watered down gas.. I've always said "I'd PUSH my car past there if I were out of gas!!"
no knock sensor on 89's?
timing would be suspect 1 (unless you have 2 gas cans, 1 with gas,1 with diesel in the garage)
catalytic convertor could definately be the culprit too, carefuly feel the pipe goin into the convertor in question and compare it to the outlet, should be close to the same.(careful,if its plugged it could be red hot.digital heat gun is handy here)
sorry, not familiar with the l98 systems specifically enough to make a detailed recommendation.
whatever it is dont keep driving it in the pinging range.
go through basic tuneup procedures first before spending money at a shop.plugs, wires etc
go to a google search and check the differences in pre-ignition and detonation if you dont already know about that.
also try an archive search in tech forum.
good luck,and welcome :seeya

:iagree: I've actually had this happen to me at a friggin Exxon run by some obvious towelheads. They were watering down the gas at night. Made my '90 run like the worst chit on this planet. I couldn't even move out of park without a couple of clanks under the hood for like 3 days. I desperately had my mechanic take out all the gas in the tank and filled her up with some REAL premium. She was back as new runnin strong with no probs. It was definitely the gas. In your case it might be either that or the timing is way off and/or you;ve got seriously bad carbon deposits in your tank. What happens is the ECM in an L98 will retard the timing automatically if theres too much carbon in the tank without you even knowing it.(Its the vette computer's way of stopping knock. It'll reduce performance incredibly under hard acceleration. If the timing goes too far off even beyond the corvette computer's capabilities, it won't be able to stop it from knocking anymore. I'd definitely go to the parts store and get some Octane boosters and/or carbon deposit removers/cleaners and/or water removers from your gas tank if you have any in it. And before that, the first thing you should do is get gas SOMEWHERE ELSE for a change to see if you notice a difference. If you do, never go back to the previous again. A vette doesn't deserve that crap. And of course, ALWAYS GIVE IT PREMIUM. I know it says "premium recommended" and alot of people up here try to cheat and get the Plus instead of supreme. Word to the wise........DON'T DO IT. MY engine's got 135k on it on my '90 and still runs stronger than my uncle's 92 with 33k on it. I've been feeding her premium non-stop for as long as I've owned her, use Z-Max micro-lubricants, and carbon removers every 6 months. When I got her, she ran like crap. Timing was way off, idle etc, slugglish acceleration.........and then boom like night and day. When I give the pedal half a tilt, she accelerates like a 60's era muscle car. Your problem may seem heavy, but I doubt it's that serious yet, just do what I said, drive it around for a while and she should be cool unless it's an actual part problem. And btw, dude I know you're a newbie, so first off ...welcome to the forum, but next time when you got a problem, display the problem in the title as best you can before crying "emergency!!!!!!!!!". I thought a vette got creamed or somethin.
Geez, next time don't title your post that way unless you mean it.
There are plenty of experts in here, you don't need to go flailing your arms around in desperation. Better yet, if you put your Tech question in the Tech section, you might actually get more help, and less crap from people like me. :seeya
dreem. is this ping thing resolved? mine is and it was a cat breaking down and scattering honeycomb and rattling and making a noise very simular to octane pinging( to the novice ear, mine) respond and lets move on or go back and fix it ! right brhind you, brother! john
