I need to put a trailer hitch on my '93. I never thought I would ever have to do this, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I have looked at Ecklers and they have a hitch that they claim requires no cutting of the body; however, it doesn't say anything about needing to cut or weld to the frame. Has anyone ever used this system? Does it require cutting or welding. Does it work well? Any help would be great.
I had a similiar need a couple years ago but never went through with the install. The kit I bought from Ecklers had no welding, but required some drilling. I sold it a long time ago and have forgotten where the holes needed to be drilled.
I also have seen a step-by-step how-to on this somewehere on the web.
I just installed this hitch on my 86. You can do a search off the link for your year, and down the page there's a link to instructions. You need some BIG drillbits and ***** to do the job :smash:
I put the hitch on my 86 too. Worked great. I found it easier to take the spare tire out and leave it out. As the spare hadn't been used in 15 years (and looked like it) it got replaced with a can of Fixaflat.
Oh, yeah, back to the hitch... I got the idea when driving through Louisiana and seeing this sailboat going down the interstate. It wasn't until I got up to the boat that I could see the early C4 towing it.
While I never towed a boat, I did pull a UHaul trailer some 3000 miles. Just about everywhere I stopped people looked quite puzzled. They would ask how I could tow anything with a Corvette. I just replied that the Vette had a truck motor so what's the difference? :D
Ah, back to the install. Yes, some real long drill bits. You're going to be going into the aluminum subframe out back. If you can afford to pay someone to do it you save yourself from a face full of hot aluminum shreds. Either that or jack it up as high as you can get it.
