Can you recoup any mod money when sell the C4?

Can you recoup any mod money when sell the C4?
I sunk more than alot of cash in my car in the past 2 years. It was tons of fun at the time, but now I want to get a C5. It appears most nice C4's, similar to mine -but without the mod's, are going for around 10 grand. Am I destined to settle for a big loss or If I hold out for a couple months, should I be able to recoup some cash?

Well, the general opinion around here(town, not forum) seems to be you get LESS for a Vette with mods then you would if it were original.. So once again, it'll be time for me to take a bath if I ever decide to sell mine :banghead:
That's true with almost anything though.. In fact, when I was looking for mine, I was looking for a 100% stock, low mile car.. I found it, and started my list of mods :jester

MUCH less than what you put in it.
I remember people with new Superrams and 383s not getting more than 10K, when the motor can cost that much by itself.
Just look in the Sale sections, its demoralizing for a seller.

Putting a lot of money in your vette is like playing a slot machine.
It's a lot of fun and if you really aren't counting on hitting the Jackpot
you can go away feeling the pleasure you had playing was worth the cost.
If you hit the Jackpot it's even better.
You had fun moding your car and if you can find someone who really
wants all those "exact" mods and is willing to pay for them that's all
the better. Often you can recoup some of the money but rarely all.
Good Luck

This subject is exactly why I've decided to keep "all" of my stock parts. At the very least I know I can put it back to original and recoup some of the money I spent on mods. Not sure how I'll recoupe ported heads and intake though unless I decide to buy new ones when the time comes.

I feel it depends on the quality of the mods and the insallation. If they are proven mods well done and the Vette is in excellent shape, you should get a little more than the market value of a stock Vette. It may take more time to find a knowledgable buyer. Who wouldn't want a really nice 450hp C4 with great brakes, for example?? No you will not get all your $$ back but maybe a few of grand over stock. I guess having the stock parts would be a plus

I'm holding onto to all the stock parts I took off so I can put them back on IF I ever sell mine. I got most of the mods for below list so I could sell them for a small loss but I don't expect to take a bath on them.
Edit: I really don't care about this issue. I'm having too much fun playing the stot machine to even care. I'm sure I will do more to the car as the budget permits but right now I've got it pretty much the way I always dreamed my first vette would look and sound.

Thanks for the feed back. I did keep the stock wheels, air cleaner, and throttle body. A little consolation. Its the right time of year to sell. Who knows maybe I'll get lucky. My expectations have come back to reality. :U Ofcourse, I may just keep the car. Afterall, it is a sweet 12 second vette!

That would be my advice, keep the C4 and save up the down payment for the C5.
You can get 5yr financing on a Vette which might allow you to have both Vettes.

When I bought my 95 coupe last year I was looking for a 100% original or stock car with low miles, would not even look at cars that had mod's because I figured they had been run harder than one that was stock. I found one with 39,000 miles owned by a lady, drove 750 miles one way to get it.

Even Vette's are cars. For the most part they are purchases not investments (Please read "for the most part") not all. Even the best get burned. On the B/J auto auction a 70 or 71 Callenger RT 440 matching #'s car with a two year $65,000.00+ restoration went for like $42,000.00, seller had no reserve. :mad Just in joy the work you did until you sell it. That has no price. :seeya

That is why you need to drive them into the ground. Don't leave anything for the next owner because they won't give you what it is worth to you anyway! Leave it for the NCRS guys to restore! It is the only way to get the maximum payout - which in my book means maximum enjoyment while you had it.

My rule of thumb is if I sell the car and only lose 90% of the cost of the mods I put in I did OK...that said, my next Vette will be fully modded...I might as well get what I want for a LOT less than it would cost me to do myself...

If you're thinking you're gonna get close to what you've put in it... you'll most likely be disappointed.
The top marketers always target an audience first, look for people that want what you've done to it... then negotiate price.
I've sold hot cars for 25% of what I had in them, then again I've sold a few for 200% more than what I had in cash and time (41 Chevy Master Deluxe w/455 gmc 4-61, auto, dana40, diamond tuck interior, tilt front for example)
My advice is... if you want something... get it buddy, life is short, and what you think as a loss of money was actually pleasure while you drove it. If you're going to get a C5, they're newer and cost more. Your 10+ year old vette is already riding the top of the used car market anyway for a production car of a third of a million copies.
Don't fret the lost dollars, your fiberglass mistress may hear you... and then allow the gremlins in just to get your attention. Cause we all know our four-wheeled mistress doesn't care about the money... she thinks she's keeping all of it anyway.
